WOODS HOLE MODEL BOAT SHOW TO BE HELD APRIL 18TH and 19TH

Join us for the Seventh Biennial Woods Hole Model Boat Show, sponsored by the Woods Hole Historical Museum. Some 125 models – both static and RC -- will be on display the weekend of April 18th and 19th throughout the village, and races of radio controlled model boats will take place both days on Eel Pond. The exhibits will feature historic and modern models, workboats and pleasure craft. At last year’s show, exhibiters came not only from the East Coast but from as far away as New Mexico.

If you’d like to include your model boats in our exhibit, check out our website at www.woodsholemuseum.org to register. The deadline is March 15th.

Workshops, demonstrations and talks will also be given on both Saturday and Sunday. Watch how artisans create ships in bottles. A boat appraiser will be available to evaluate visitors’ maritime items. Commercial exhibiters will sell completed models, kits and equipment for building models, and on Saturday morning Nobska Lighthouse and the Woods Hole aquarium will be open to visitors.

Children will be able to build, paint and sail a model boat from a kit ($10), and to play with radio-controlled boats, as well.

The show is a friend maker and fundraiser for the Woods Hole Historical Museum. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children over six -- or $25 for families.

See our website for more information on the show and for photos of the previous years, and please feel free to give us a call at (508) 548-7270.

Woods Hole is a great place to visit. All kinds of real boats and the models in the museum are super. This is well worth the trip if you can make it. I went to highschool in Falmouth which is the next town to Woods Hole. The famous oceanographic institute is there too so there is much to see. Pete

re Woods Hole:

And don't forget the Marine Biological Laboratory (great place to take kids for the science exhibits)!

The Museum is a fine place indeed, with friendly, knowledgable people. And it even has a 1:1 boatbuilding program, which makes small boats and raffles them off for the benefit of the Museum.

Cheers,
Capt. Spaulding

Ghost:

This might be a good place to start: http://www.whoi.edu/page.do?pid=7121

The ships are amazing in person. Unfortunately, I've never been on board one, but it's possible to get reasonably close to them for a detailed look when they are tied up.

WHOI has a good visitors' center, with some very interesting exhibits, particularly about deep submersibles and the Titanic.

Cheers,
Capt. Spaulding

Not my usual haunts, but can anyone direct me to a good source for model sailboat racing hardware and info? My 63yr. old Father is retired and wants to get into sailing model boats again. He has a scale Etchells 22 model that is ready for hardware, a rig and a deck but could use more info on setups and a source for good hardware. He and I would both like to get into racing 1m or IOM boats at some point as well.

Thanks in advance,
Matt (feel free to PM or e-mail me links and info, and yes we will be at the WHOI show ;)

luger007, You might get more info if you post on the sailboat forum. A local club is a good starting place too. If you want to race you'll have to see what everyone else is racing. If you are interested in joining a sailing club see the AMYA club list at:

http://www.modelyacht.org/club/clublist.html

For a couple of years our club received invites to this event. It was hard to turn them down as we're sure it is a great venue. The commute from Milwaukee would be a killer even with car pooling. :D

Thanks for the links guys. I've already been to the AMYA site, guess I'll try the sail section of the boat forum.

As for driving from WI to MA, consider it an adventure :) You only live once and the show we went to 2 years ago was a load of fun, this year I'm bringing my 3yr old. Woods Hole is also an amazing little town, with lots to see outside the show! (pretty good food too)
