View Full Version : Your favorite car of all time...

I'm doing some car shopping this weekend. I need a econo clunker for the summer to drive to work. Thinking about what I needed I instantly remembered my little Horizon.
I think my favorite car that I have so far owned has been a 1989 Horizon. It was super cheap on gas and ran like a top. (The 5 speed manual was great!) Still runs today though my brother has it with 199k miles on it. He replaced the original clutch in it at 190k... (That and 5th gear was in 4 pieces when he pulled the trans apart.)
A close second would be my 74 Nova. Though it wasn't fuel efficient. But hey you can't beat the power of a mild v-8!
What's yours??

'74 VW Karmann Ghia. Great VW gas mileage and looks like a Porche. I just rolled over 300K and pulled the engine to rebuild. Very easy to work on and runs great. I was able to tear the entire engine down with a basic set of hand tools.

Morris Minor 1000
I got mine in 1978 and it has never let me down.
It has a starting handle, so if the battery goes flat, you can still get it going.
They suffer a bit from tinworm (rust) though.
But these cars never die, they just get heavier; from all the steel plate welded on.

My favorite car of all time for me is the '87-90 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z28. I own its little brother,an '89 RS,and with the 5 speed stick its a fun little car to drive while I look for an IROC.

My trusty old '71 Maverick (a Ford for you younger people that have never seen one) Iv'e
had it about 20 yrs, and 562,268 miles worth(no, not the original engine) It's an original "Grabber" also. One of several, all others I had were race cars. Second, my '69
Mustang with a 460 in it. Also had about 18 yrs. I never sell some stuff due to I hear too many other people regret selling their first car!

Oh, my... Reliant Robin from Mr. Bean.
Favourite best car was a Volvo 145 Wagon, only restriction was having to put on a roof rack to haul 4x8 plywood, but the 2x4s you could just load in until the Michelins went flat. Tough, and tractible: I ran a couple of ladies home in a snowstorm that had the plow equipment falling off the road, never found conditions that could stop it, from creekbeds to standing timber. Not bad on fuel either.
Drove Moggies for 30 years, still have a soft spot for them, but I am past that, I build my own now.

It's a toss up between '67 Valiant slant six and a '67 Volvo 122
The Valiant was just like it's name sake, kept at for over 80k and then a friend put probably 120k on it after I sold it to him.. great car, kinda mechaniclly noisy for a six but I can tell by ear when someone starts one up, very distinctive.. I can see why Click and Clack like 'em. The funny thing is my Mercedes with its DOHC aluminum head sounds almost exactly like it..odd.
The Volvo was a fixer-upper for $125.00 that I eventually put $500.00 into over a three year period. Mostly bad front end and tranny work. But it was a daily driver and a remarkably reliable one at that. The thing I liked about it was its '50ish look's and its gentle road manners for such a narrow car. well balanced and capable of some off-roading if the traction was there. Really sorry I sold it 'cause the kid who bought it never appreciated it and tried to drive it too fast.

My favorite car of all time was a '90 Plymouth Colt that I bought from a friend for $400.00 and a surfboard. It didn't have an ignition switch (instead it had a master switch and a starter button), air conditioning, stereo or a drivers side window. It got great gas mileage, hauled butt when properly flogged, handled well (especially off-road http://www.ezonemag.com/disc/smile.gif), could carry three guys + full dive gear (or surfboards, or backpacks..) and I never had to worry about anybody stealing it.
I left it unlocked and all my friends new they could take it without asking, just make sure to leave some gas in it. Left it in Yosemite for two weeks with the windows rolled down and nobody touched it (except for some sort of small animal that appeared to build a nest in the back seat). Owned it for a year or so and never washed it or did ant maintenance other than a very occasional oil change. Gawd, I miss that car...

Ah, simpler days. My favorite was a '56 VW bug affectionately known as "Otto the Auto".
That car would (and did) go almost anywhere. From Venice beach to San Francisco, San Felipe to the high Sierras it was always reliable and always in style.
Drive on Otto.

Likely right, Martin, i am 5,000 miles from the scene, i only know that Reliant built the beast along with some other fascinating autos. One thing about the Brits, they have no fear of Things Different. One auto that I wouldn't mind finding in a scrapyard would be that incredible motorcycle-powered sports car, the Berkeley. Room for 2 people (not large) and enough trunk/storage space for half a ham sandwich and a change of thought. More fun than a Sprite!

Ford Escort Mark One - reg # LUP 185J. The first car we had after I had passed my test. Bought in 1980 for thirty pounds as an MOT failure because of a rusty hole in the petrol tank. She was thirteen years or so old then. Paid twenty quid to have the petrol tank welded http://www.ezonemag.com/disc/eek.gif to pass the MOT and that was the only garage bill for a full years motor.
After her first day (Christmas Eve 1980) when she left us stranded for six hours in the rain until 4am the Escort carried us all over the place without a hitch. It certainly paid us back for that first day breakdown. We towed neighbours, friends and relations cars through the snow that winter, went off road in the forests of North Wales during my field season and that little green Escort never missed a beat.
Towards the end of the year the bodywork was looking even shabbier than usual and the outer door skin was missing up to about hals way p the door- no way was the Escort going to pass an MOT but as students we had one last trip to a meeting in Bristol ( a goodl long trek). Out came the control line modelling tackle- so I doped a nylon panel onto the door where the old door skin had been and sprayed it green from a can. It lasted all the way there and back through the snow and slush. Then one year on and the MOT sounded LUP's death knell and she went to the great scrap heap in the sky to be replaced by The Orange Avenger (from hell).
I still miss that little car sometimes - thirty quid for a years motoring http://www.ezonemag.com/disc/frown.gif

Maybe I'm just getting old, or maybe it's because I have teenage drivers, but an old car that's paid for is most beautiful to my eyes.
When the children are "gone" I'd like a late model VW sedan or wagon.
For now, I'd rather have the children & a hooptie.

Myfavorite is my first. 1979 Pontiac Trans Am 10th aniversary edition. Lets see a 400 BB (big block not ball bearing http://www.ezonemag.com/disc/smile.gif ) and a Hurst 4 speed tranny. This thing would cream to beat the band!!! Had tons of fun with it and the girls loved it. Platinum sivler with grey accents and multicolored Firebirds embroidered into the grey leather door panels and backseats. T-tops were great in the summer! Of course in support of Buzzmans post above. Guy bought it new in 1979 and stored it. I got it in 1982 with 1200 miles on it. Got my licensein April of '82 and by Sept. of the same year I had 12,000 miles on iton top of being totalled by hitting a tree with the roof of the car! for young guys old cars do have advantages. OHH, but the memories of my youth.

The Reliant 3-wheelers, exploited a loophole in the law where you could drive a 3 wheeled car on a motorbike licence.
They were only driven by people who cuold'nt be **rsed to take their test.

Lancia Delta Integrale - never owned one, but had a couple of drives in one a few years back - the first two minutes frightened the c**p out of me, but after that it was the most exciting thing I'd ever done. Unfortunately, when the time came that I could afford one, Lancia pulled out of the UK due to bad press and consequent low sales, giving the Italian version of the 'Up Yours' sign, and only second-hand LHD examples were available. So it remains a dream. (Had a Dedra Turbo, though - nice and quick)

Anyone driven an Austin Martin? (Or atleast touch one.. http://www.ezonemag.com/disc/smile.gif ) I like how they look, how do they drive? Just as good? http://www.ezonemag.com/disc/smile.gif
Still, I think the issue at heart would be for me where to get parts and not pay out the nose for them... But then again, if I had the money to own something like that, it wouldn't be a problem!

AUSTIN Martin??? As a young guy a salesman gave me a ride in a DB4, smooth to way over 1 and a quarter, handled well enough at ANY speed, easily repaired by today's standards.
I had the chance to add $600 to the price of a Merc pickup to get one, but I needed the p/u more than speeding tickets, even if there wasn't a copcar in the area that could keep that Aston in sight.
Austin Martin... We built the Lumbergini (what else do you call a wood car?) and have a number of designs for others, including the Ashton Martin, the Firarri, the Bent(wood)ley, etc, all wood construction on pickup chassis.

I guess the most frustrating car I've owned was a '73 SAAB 99 EMS. Frustrating in that the engine and chassis were awesome, the 2 liter slant 4 had a big cam and great breathing allowed by the J tronic fuel injection all coupled to the front driven wheels by a great tranny with an Achilles heel of that stupid clutch to tranny gear tower,... PPPBBBBTTTT! I thoroughly despise all SAABs now, have had five of em and they're all high priced junk. Don't even get me started on the 95/96's with their precious freewheels.... and v4 balance shaft gears....
Rant over, I'm fine now.

Well it was five different models.
'62 and '71 96's
and a '65 95 wagon named Rudeboy, believe me they were all rude. Guess I was sold on the legend of their rally successes. I have to admit that the two strokes were pluggers... despite their gutlessness. Aways ran as long as I kept them happy with 33 to 1 premix.
The 99 came with a parts car, in retrospect, I should have not bothered.

My favorite is my 63B Porsche coupe (Fast Frieda is her name--all Porsches are females)--not too sophisticated by today's standards but a lot of real "in the seat of your pants" feel when driving. It also gets lots of conversation at stop lights. One day about 4 years ago at a light on a warm summer nite I heard a bunch of kids in the car next to me saying "That must be the new Beetle".
I also love my 74 Karmann Ghia Cabriolet (owned since new)--not as quick as Fast Freida but very mellow.
Finally, for modeling, it has to be the Windstar van--can pack lotsa models in her.

FIVE OF THEM???? Man you guys give car makers too many breaks. I owned a Chevy Citation. I will NEVER buy another GM product. Period. Yeah, I know it was their first attempt at FWD, and it was their first REAL attempt at unibody construction, but they hardly even tried. What a piece of ****! My first Japanese car was a 1967 Datsun that I bought for 200.00 in college and drove for two years before I killed it (my fault). Then I owned a Toyota Corolla. I'll only buy Toyota now. Well, I have a bunch of favorite cars.
As far as cars I've actually owned my favorite is my first car, a 1976 Chevy Monza 2+2 hatchback.
Came with a 262.5 cu.in. V8 and ran like the proverbial striped ape.
I still have it, except now it has a built 350 in it! We figure honest 325 Hp in a 2700# car! Kinda hard to find parts for...
I had a '66 6volt Beetle I called Von Wreckedoften that I loved. Quintessential "Beater" Bug.
My '71 Camaro that started as a $100.00 US basketcase.
I like Pontiac Grand Prixs. On my second...
I pretty much dig anything with wheels.

69 GTO. Spent 3 years restoring it. Kept it for 5 years. Ran real good.
The one I dream about? 1950 Chevy truck.. installed 392 HEMI and mopar 4 speed. 390 gears. This beast was built by me and some high school friends in Friona Texas in 1965. I wanted to keep her for my own, but never got the chance.

'64 Mustang- it only had a 189 with a 3 speed stick but it is still my favorite car.
'78 Chev Camaro- could spin the tires in 3rd gear and it was fast. I think I got 4 or 5 tickets in the 4 years I had it and only 1 since-lol ( by the way did you know red sports cars get pulled over more than any other vehicle).
"87 Toyota 4 X 4 Pickup- Put 140,000 miles on it in 6 years and loved it. Wished it would have had Air cconditioning though. Agreed Kapos-enough said.
And now I have a '98 Dodge Ram Quad Cab- very nice truck. I need to get a shell for the back though. When I go flying with my son it pretty much take up the whole back seat with planes. Not that I have to many but we are limited to 1 plane each when we go.

my 1984 Mustang LX 3.8l...its been in the family as long/or as longer than I've been alive! It's only got 23 thousand or so miles (only because there's only five digit places..which really means either 123 or 223 thousand :D). My mom got in an accident with it and busted it up some, but we had it fixed. I hit a friend's parked car while parking during my senior year of high school, but no damage to my car...dang civics are like aluminum! (hey I had remnants of the flu and was drowsy that morning!)
Overall there are so many other cars I'd rather own, but the little stang is a part of me. Its been through alot and I love it. Have had thoughts of selling it but really never want to, even when I do get that 1988-1992 ex CHP Mustang......

76 Scamp--- Learned to drive on that car. Although the car was very primitive, still loved the slant 6. Handeled like a wet noodle though. Hated to start when it was damp out.
84 Prelude Bought it with 48K, drove it to 140 somthing thousand and traded it in for about $500 less than I paid for it. Only changed the brakes and tires... never had to fix anything. Got in the low 40s milage, and handeled GREAT. Got a new Chevy Blazer 'cause I needed more room. Wanted the Lude back with in the first week. The Blazer was nothing but trouble.
96 Maxima... Current car. Get 32 MPG and it is no slouch with accelration, braking or handeling.... a real sleeper. Not a Prelude, but it does have 4 doors and a roomy back seat which fits 3 car seats... Something the Lude would never do. I even tow a 1K pound trailer for my planes, and occationally other stuff, with it. While towing the trailer it accelerates and brakes better than the wifes Mom Bomb (Aka Olds Mini Van) At a little over 85K I still has the original brakes, and it has been in the shop 0 times. I did look at the plugs at 60K. Looked fine, so I put them back in :)

I guess it was my 59 Pontiac Star Chief 4dr. 389, 4sp hydro, big as an aircraft carrier, but perfectly predictable handling no matter how hard you pushed it...really wish I still had it.

HUGE inside, comfortable, felt like it was idling at 70 mph. At that speed on a freeway, it would get 17 mpg...not bad for a 2 ton car with a 6 litre engine that was already 12 years old when I got it!

So far it's my 1977 Porsche 924. Your butt is about 6 inches off the ground and it is the Best handling car I've ever driven. Will corner at Scary speeds and stick like glue. Drifts are like something out of the movies and totally controllable. :D A pain to keep running though. Parts are getting hard to find.:(

1988 Mitsubishi Starion, white, as in "the white car" (most of my cars have been black).
Awesome car, cheap, powerful (turbo), best climate control system ever, best seats ever, stereo controls in the steering wheel.
Sharp looking car too....

There's a place in Painesville Ohio that refurbs and sells classic cars. In their showroom, I saw a Cuda that was priced at about US$90K, along with about 2 dozen other cars, including a '60s Vette and a '50s Tbird.

1931 Ford model A Roadster convertible,...hows that for a mouthful?lol...my fondest memories as a kid was going to the DQ with my grandpa in his ..it became a regular ritual each time we visited ...after his stroke ,of course the treat was gone ...it wasn't until several years later after I had learned to drive that he insisted (in his limited way speech wise) that I drive him to the DQ for our "ritual" once again. That was the last time we went together as he passed away a few months later...i'll never forget the look of happiness on his face as we drove around town one last time together...its my car now and everytime my grandkids come to visit ...well you know the rest....

When my dad let me borrow this I felt like I ruled the world. Start it and the little louver on the top of the cowl (up in this parked photo) rotates to a down position, flush with the hood. Touch the gas and with the light rear end and heavy engine the tires squeal.
Those were the days.

My favourite car is my '72 Jensen Interceptor Mk3 with the 383 Chrysler engine which has more HP than the later 440 smogged engines although there's also the Interceptor SP which has the 440 Six Pack and a lot more HP. If I could afford one (and find one!) there's the Jensen FF like in the photo which is 4WD, traction control and anti-lock brakes (Maxaret). These were the first road car ever made with specs like that and it was another 13 years before Audi made the Quattro but only after they bought an FF to find out how it worked :).

I have to go with the Duke Boys' car. The 1969 Dodge Charger. A big piece of obnoxious, badass power in classic Hemi Orange. There's a Dodge dealership behind my house that has a 2009 Challenger up on blocks. God, I want that car.

1951 Carryall Suburban. It was 4 years older than me. Never got to drive it, sold it before I finshed it. It was still my favorite and gave me hours and hours of fun.

Dang! I love those.
I remember a guy had a '74 Suburban, IIRC, the cool thing was all the seats folded completely flat and quickly, sort of like our old '55 Chevy wagon. It was a breeze loading plywood.
My '92 van requires two people, or a lot of grunting to remove the seats and there are heavy steel clamps left on the floor.

The original seats were missing when I got this one. They really weren't that comfortable but everyone(burb owners) wanted a set. If I had had mine I would have sold them for the money. 16 pieces of glass. All flat except the two on the rear doors.

Maybe not the most glamorous, but she was mine. A Simca 1000 with 1294cc engine (not this one. Got no pics of mine, but she was sea-green). We (my brother and I) used to pull our trailered dinghy with that car, and she invariably would overheat. But without the trailer.....whoooaaaa!

That doesn't surprises me, that you were happy with that car. You know why? Because the engine and the gearbox were from Volkswagen Rabbit. :D

1275 with stage-3 rally head, twin SU's and K&N's. Don't remember much else, except it got around 7mpg around town, and 40+ on the highway! :D
Notice the air horns and upgraded brakes. One for getting people out of the way and the other for when they don't..

In this picture the blue one is mine.. the white one belongs to a friend it is serial No 003.. $$$$ yikes..
I can't have this car in Hawaii .. the salt air would destroy it in just a few short years
sigh! ...what to do.

Hands down. A used Datsun 1200 I bought with my slim savings, even while attending university. I understand they still rally them in Australia. Mine was puke green, but with oversized winter tires, it could go anywhere. Didn't need to clutch to shift, just get the revs right, and a little pressure on the stick would let it glide into the next gear. I moved all my worldly possesions from Nova Scotia to Calgary when I graduated, some in the trunk, and more on the back seat. A fun little car. 50 miles to the Imperial gallon. Wish I still had it, probably the 70's version of a Smart.
