It seems to me a joystick would work great to control the movement of a video tripod pan head. The left/right/forward/backward movements would correspond to left/right pans and up/down tilts. I'd need quiet, smooth-running motors geared to push around a two-pound camera. Any thoughts on the electronics and construction of such an animal? :D

You can get the video head here http://www.servocity.com/html/direct_drive_pan___tilts.html . With that and a inexpensive 2.4 system such as the Spectrum DX5e, or you could go a wired route.

The security field also uses what you describe, as does the professional video field, the price tends to be a little steep.
