I am looking forward to this thread. I see that the plane is only $400.00 which is amazing considering how much lumber is involved.

Hi Geoff: Your Thread Inspired Me to Get a 33% Sukhoi & When I Saw The Nitroplanes Suk & @ that Price I Figured Why Not!! The AUW Seems a Bit High! My Sukhoi is Scheduled to Arrive Tomorrow! Can't Wait to Look It Over! :) Cheers: Jp

I am glad that I am inspirational. I have recently had emails from two others that are doing the Hangar-9 Sukhoi with exactly the same hardware (motor, ESC, batteries) that I used.

With the economy tighter it is interesting to see the gap in prices widening between the name brand manufacturers and others. I originally bought my Sukhoi in September for $799.00 CDN dollars and now with the Horizon price jump and the poor performing CDN dollar it would cost me $1250.00 CDN to replace it. Unfortunately for us Canucks almost all of the RC market is in US currency.

My next big plane will likely be from a non-brand name house such as NitroPlanes as half price goes a long way towards updating any questionable hardware.

Looks good JP. Only wish we had a Nitroplanes in the UK. No doubt this will be from the same manufacturer as the Yak 54 2.2 that I've got. Not great build quality but not bad either. Will be watching with interest.

What servos you going to use? I used some high torque Hobby City digitals to great affect on my 2.2m Yak. Wondering if a 33% would need more. I suppose there are 2 servos each side on the ailerons?

Hi Ditchit: Nitroplanes Ships International Via Air Parcel Post/Ems, Curious to See What Shipping Would Be to the UK? I Am Thinking I'll Probably Need 2 Servos Per Aileron & Also 2 For the Rudder. I Am Going to Be Using Tower Hobbies TS-150 Servos All Around (193 Oz's Torque @ 6V) The Sukhoi Is Due to Arrive Today, I'll Give It the Once Over & Report Back With More Info Regarding Servo's Etc.

Cheers: Joe :)

Hi Steve: Yes I Have a CC 110 HV ESC I'll Be Using In the Sukhoi!! I Also Am Using the Turnigy Sentilon 100 Amp HV in My Nitroplanes 30% Yak-54. I Am Very Satisfied With It. Good Luck With The 30% Sukhoi Build! I Have the Same One In Queue to Build. I'll Be Posting Pic's as the Build Progresses. Cheers: Joe :)

You're going to be rather underpowered if you're really going with CC's max 110A rating. You'll just be barely above 1:1 in the thrust/weight department.

Yardbee
Feb 04, 2009, 03:44 AM
According to Specs: The Motor I'll Be Using Puts Out a Max Of 4884 Watts @ 110 Amps. Ive Calculated My Power to Weight Ratio Should Be Close to 175 Watts Per Lb. I Am Hoping to Come Close to The Stated Specs. It Should Be Enough for Sport Areobatics! :)

Joe,

it will fly just fine. You will need a big, low-pitch prop to overcome the drag of that big open cowling. I think a 28X10 would be a safe limit for your ESC. I looked up your motor, seems to be a great choice, and you won't be stressing it at all. Maybe slightly lower KV would be better for prop-hanging tho. Still, 4884 watts should give you AT LEAST 40-pounds of thrust.

For esc cooling, i've seen someone mount it directly under the cowling in the prop blast. worked great.

What is the C rating on your lipos? If they are 20C or 25C then you could go with 12S1P to save weight. The batts would have to be inside the cowl for balance, maybe even directly under the motor, or one on each side of the motor.

Here's my take on battery choice: I always like to sacrifice flying time for weight. That's why i fly a 6-pound airplane on a 4S 2100mah 25C li-po. I could go with 4S 4200mah, but instead i have two 2100's and just land and swap them out for another flight. That way i get the flight time of a 4200 but carry the weight of a 2100. Oh yes, the plane has exactly 600 watts and it will go vertical from takeoff for 150-feet, and then stop and hang on the prop.

BoneDoc, how many amps does your extra 260 draw? Whats the all-up weight? I watched the vids on youtube... nice flying! Your extra is not the least bit underpowered. unless, of course, you're looking to reach escape velocity :D

Steve: I'll Be Using 4 6S 5000 Mah Lipos In Series Parallel, My Lipo's Are Rated to 35C & I Am Hoping that the 4 Lipo's Up Against the Firewall Will Be Enough Weight to Come Within the CG Range!! I Am Planning On Mounting the ESC On the Side Of the Motor Mount Or As You Suggested In the Cowl Area. Thanks for the Propeller Size Suggestion! 28 X 10 Would Be a Good Prop to Start With. Enjoy Your 30% Sukhoi Build!! & Las Cruces is a Very Nice Town!! I Always Enjoy the View of the Organ Mountains!! Cheers: Joe :)

Hi Joe,

I actually haven't decided on which plane to buy yet. I'm gonna follow your build to decide for sure. I really have a few options:
-50cc plane from nitro
-100cc nitroplanes sukhoi
-scratch-build an edge 540 (but purchase cowl and canopy)
-find a screaming deal here on rcgroups for an old, beat-up giant scale plane.

either way, i am determined to get into giant scale one of these days!! :p
Alot of it depends how well i do this semester. If i get above 3.2, i get payed to go to school :D :D If i do worse, then that's another story

yes, Las Cruces is great. pretty much every day is a good flying day. Do you visit here often? If you're ever in town, come by and fly with us. If you don't have planes with you, i have a few you could fly :)

Yup, the Organs are very nice. I've been on baylor peak (the peak just to the left of the pointy rocks) and it was an awesome view. 3200-feet above the valley. Here's some pics of the organs...

Keep the build comin! :)

Steve: Here's a Picture of My Nitroplanes Yak-54 Converted to Electric!! It Flies Very Nice & Has Power to Spare!! Thanks for the Awesome Pictures!! Its Been Quite a While Since Ive Driven Through Las Cruces, When I Used to Visit My Folks in Texas I Drove Through LC & Usually Stayed Overnight. Whichever Airplane You Choose! Big Electrics Are a Blast to Fly!! :)

P.S: Hey Todd!!!!!! Id Be Honored If You Test Flew My Sukhoi!! :D

:) okay i just ordered one of these as a buddy told me about it. For this price i am willing to be the guinnie pig :D . I have a whole hanger of 33% and 35% aircraft but like i said this is a great price. I am not sure as what i will do this (Gas or electric) but something else has to get sold or go in before this one is built.

Yadrbee how is the build going on this. would like to here your thoughts so far on it, hows the weight.??? how does it fly ??

You're not the only guinea pig here I have one as well but like you I won't be building it for awhile as I still have to get an engine (going gas), servos, reciever, batts, and such. My original plan was to try to come in around $1500 USD but it looks more like $2000 for the way I want to equip mine (smoke, ect.)...

warhawk: I am still gathering up accessories together for the build of the Sukhoi. Ive decide to use 1 high torque servo per aileron instead of 2 & 1 Servo for rudder as well. The sukhoi will have a 4885 watt motor & 4 6S 5000 Mah Lipo's. I am buying a little at a time & will have approximately $1000.00 in accessories. I'll keep you posted on my progress. Good luck with your build.

Yardbee - Is the plane designed for one or two servos per aileron?
Planes designed for two typically have un-stiff ailerons and require the two servos to prevent flutter.

SportFlyer2
Mar 13, 2009, 04:58 PM
It has two per aileron and two on the rudder in unison...

Ok got everything weighed up...Kinda on the porky side at 20.575 lbs.

Here's the breakdown:

Fuse
6lbs 4oz

Right Wing and ail
3lbs 3.8oz

Left Wing and ail
3lbs 1.8oz

Right Stab and elevator
0lbs 12.8oz

Left Stab and elevator
0lbs 11.4oz

Rudder
0lbs 8.8oz

Cowl
1lb 7.4oz

Wheel pants
0lbs 3.8oz

Landing gear legs
1lb 0.2oz

Lexan canopy
0lbs 9.8oz

Control rods and horns
0lbs 4.6oz

Hardware package
1lb 1.4oz

Wing and stab tubes total
1lb 3.4oz

All items were weighed in the original bags and foam packing. So figure 2-3lbs for packaging and I get 17.5-18.5lbs minus engine or motor (if running electric) and radio gear, etc...

Joe,
The suppo motor, what are the specs on it? I've checked a few places and no luck. I'm going to watch your build since I'm slowly thinking that this is a must have bird... Or atleast get some good ideas on my Greatplanes Christen Eagle convert.

(the sad thing is that every plane in my basement at one time was a must have....pittful;)

:D well just went and picked mine up and all i can say is i think UPS lost money on shipping this box. This is a huge box.

i opened up the box and all is perfect. have a couple dents on top of the turtle deck but i should be able to get them out. I feel that i will buy genuine robart hinges as the ones supplied are a little so so in my opinion. i took everything out of the bags and weighed it and the total is 18lbs this is giving a little here and there. so with that weight and a dl100 plus all the gear it should take me to 28lbs give or take a 1/2 lbs
but i also have a DA85 that could lighten things up :D it is presently in a hanger 9 sukhoi su26. i am curoius to see the difference in the flyability of these 2 airplanes but this one will not be built until one of my other 35%er's sells or goes in. A buddy of mine has just got into electrics and he says that i should do this one in electric. all i can say is time will tell.

looking forward to some people getting this plane in the air. ;)

Any news on the sukhoi's? I still haven't finished my yak. Looking for a cowl. Can some one measure the size of your Sukhoi cowl? Thanks

So far, the wings, rudder, wing tube, and horizontal stabs for my yak are right at 6LBS. I figure i can build the fuse at 6LBS pretty easily. Add motor, batteries, ect, and weight should be 17-ish pounds. Should be a floater!

Can't wait to see your sukhoi's!

Where in Las Cruces would you fly a giant scale aerobatic plane? NMSU/Stadium parking lot is dangerously close to the freeway!

lol yeah, i would have to drive way out in the desert to the club gas field for the giant scale stuff. There's absolutely NOTHING around there (except for cactuses and dust). I think there is a ranch house a couple of miles away.

But yes, even for the larger park flyers, the highway is a little too close for comfort.

Ok, just about got mine completed but it is extremely tail heavy!!!

I'll have to go back to the drawing board and go ahead and install the smoke system now instead of later, put the wheel pants on and move all the batteries and anything else I can find to the front before adding weight. Right now she's at about 29.5 lbs so it won't be a 3D monster but should be fun none the less if she holds together...
