Well, after months of hard work we are finally up and running on our new web site platform. Our old site will stay up for a while so we can work out all the little details but we invite you to take a look and provide feedback:

OSX safe, it seems that the site is not adjusting for the differences in PC/Mac, Mozilla/IE/Safari. It looks as if you are doing Div layers or CSS spacing, I have not looked through your "public" source but I can tell just from Images overlapping Text and then the text over lapping text with the background set as white. Image attached. Simple fix is to adjust CSS for mac safe assuming the CSS is laid out efficiently, and then having two CSS files and one for OSX and one for PC using java(or your flavor) to detect browser and use that css sheet. Or add a padding or margin to all cells that are effected that should fix it depending on how it is done now. and so on.
Other then that I like the new homepage/layout.

We are having a killer sale on the new site today and it was flooded with people coming to look. The servers crashed on the new site with the load! The company that's hosting the website is taking steps to solve this. It should be back up to normal this evening.

Other then that I like the new homepage/layout.It's not a Mac issue as it's messed up on windows too, for example
http://www.hobbylobbyrc.net/subcategory_116.htm
The description under "Wing-Dragon" Complete RC Airplane should read:
Exceptional trainer has EVERYTHING in one box! Assembles in 15 minutes!
But "Assembles in 15 minutes!" is cut off, on the Mac you can see some of the line so you can tell it's messed up but on firefox in Windows it cuts off even more so you don't see the chopped line. But you can select it and copy it, just not read it :)
So it's not a Mac issue but one of amateur CSS coding & design skills, or ignoring the design limitations by adding more text than allowed.

They handle tons of websites, if they crashed today they are going to crash constantly when you go live with this site. But if being down for a day at a time is acceptable...

Well maybe not, I decided to browse through some additional pages and found this http://www.hobbylobbyrc.net/rc_airplanes_84_ctg.htm on the "Wing Dragon 4" RTF Aileron Trainer, it states Great first aileron plane, and - EVERYTHING you need is when it should say Great first aileron plane, and - EVERYTHING you need is included in the box.
There are a number of planes with the main description cut off on that link. I think you guys need to get the programmer to go over everything because some of the code is getting cut off.

shipping costs seems different on the new website. For example, shipping for the Executive Jet on the old website is $8.99 for standard shipping whereas the new site calculates by where it ships to and gives me $19.99 to CA.

I don't really like the new site, it just seems like it has more animation and white space, and not much attention to working with Firefox.

I prefer the old site myself, but maybe it's because I've gotten use to it over the years. The old site has a classic Hobby Lobby feel to it as compared to other hobby store websites, which to me is not a bad thing. I guess someone felt the new site would be more interesting to new customers.
KA6IPK
Jan 21, 2009, 10:12 AM
Another problem with the website is it that when I click on shopping cart, all I get is a total number of items and total cost, but the individual items aren't listed. I have to go to Checkout from there in order to see the list and then be able to make changes.
KA6IPK
Jan 21, 2009, 10:19 AM
I did another pretend order where I had the Executive Jet listed and then added the Blade MCX, which has free shipping with it. The recalculated total still shows a $19.99 shipping cost, so I guess the free shipping only applies to ordering the Blade MCX by itself. I don't know if that's the intent or another error.

I have always loved the simplicity of your web site.
In my opinion the new look is not better.
Roll it back to the old UI and I'll bet nickles to dollars you'll make more sales and spend less on your website.

Well, I've been dabbling with the new website for about a week now, and these are my impressions:
1) I think this is an additional website specifically for hosting Bargain Hangar sale items only as the regular items cannot be found on the site such as 4mm motor connectors. Can Jason or someone at HL clarify if this is an additional website or if your going to the new website format to replace your existing website?
2) The pricing seems independent between the old and new website for the same items. I noticed that the bargain hangar prices for items on the new website and not reflected for the same item on the old website.
3) The shipping costs also appears to be different on the new website, where the shipping costs are calculated based upon the size or weight I suppose of the item being purchased. The new website has the same shipping cost policy, but the checkout costs do not reflect the policy. I have yet to get the shipping to show the $8.99 standard shipping regardless of what model I add to the shopping cart. I didn't proceed to an actual purchase, just enough to see what the charges would be.
4) Items added to the shopping cart on the new or old website are not reflected in the shopping cart on the other website; the two shopping carts appear to be independent so there would be two seperate shipping charges instead of a combined checkout list with one shipping charge.
Hopefully these are items to be corrected and not the norm.

Richard,
The BargainHanger site will be a separate discount site. We are running the old and new HL site until we get the bugs worked out on the new site. Once we feel confident that everything is working as it should, the old site will go away. We are not updating pricing or making changes to anything on the old site. We are focusing our energy on the new site right now. There will be a few tiers for shipping costs based on the size of the items in the cart. We still have a lot of work to do, but once it's finished, it will offer a much better customer experience than the old site was capable of. Keep the suggestions coming. We need the feedback both good and bad.

I checked out the new web site today and I found it difficult to locate the lipo battery I was looking for. All the batteries are mixed up not in order like the old site, I gave up after a five minutes of searching. I really like your old web site better seems much easier to find items. Also the site is slow compared to the old web site. Hoping that the battery section is revised. Thanks, Nathan

It's HORRIBLE!!!!! Much too busy and it doesn't seem to be well organized. Too many clicks needed to browse. Hard to find a particular item you're looking for. I can't even begin to tell you how much I hate it.
The old site was much better organized. For example I could browse brushless motors and all the brands were on one page where I could pick a brand to peruse. Click on that brand and there was a logical progression of motors in a vertical list format. Simple to return and pick a different brand.
On the new site first I have to click on motors and accessories, then pick brushless and up comes a hodge podge of motors of different brands. Then you pick a brand and they do come up in order, but still more dificult to find the particular one you want because of the left to right, next line please, and so on. To view another brand, you must de-select the first brand before selecting a new brand or both will come up. Other classes of items are similarly formatted.
The old site was a better, richer visual experience. The new site looks cheap and too much like something thrown together by someone in a hurry.
While I'm not a big customer I must say that the new format will not stop me (make it more difficult perhaps) from buying an item I am looking for. It will make the routine, window shopping experience a lot worse, and of course if the experience is worse it's only human nature that I'll subconsciously avoid it.
Did I mention I hate it?
With all due respect.

I would like to thank everyone for the feedback so far - keep it coming!
Several accurate comments have been made about how it is hard to search by brand or product type. We don't want to lose the "window shopping" ability the old site had. This week we will launch a new feature called "PowerSearch" that should allow you to drill down quite easily and compare products multiple ways.
We will also look to add a few more ways to present product lists that are more visually pleasing.
Still much more work to do - but we couldn't make it happen without your observations.
Thanks, Jay

When showing the results of a search there should be a next page button at the bottom of the page. I scroll through the items and get to the bottom, no next button. I have to go to the top of the page again
Should be at the bottom:
Showing 1 - 36 of 3930 | Next >
People new to the site who don't look at the number of results might think there is one page of items when they get to the bottom.

Love the new website; much better than the previous one. Much more pleasing to the eyes and easier to navigate. In particular, I like the buttoned area that has things like video, specifications, reviews, everything needed, replacement parts, etc. In the previous website you had to read long paragraphs for the specs and scroll through all that "here's what other people bought" junk to find other information.
My recommendation would be to include more information with each product. I really like all the information provided on Tower Hobbies products. Gets the information out there thoroughly and concisely. Maybe it's just the engineer in me but I like information packed text, not wordy paragraphs.
Here's an example. This product just assaults you with a wall of text:
http://www.hobbylobbyrc.net/product_6912_detailed.htm
All of the important information could have been included in the spec sheet and would have been very short. Include a features tab, too, if you want. I really, REALLY like it when the instruction manual is available right there. Usually, its so I can decide on a motor or see how the retracts are installed. Stuff like that, that isn't in your description.

I ordered a BEC that arrived in a 4X4X4 in box which in the past qualified for $3.99 shipping. I think the old site still mentions it. I called and found out that for orders from the new site, shipping cost is now "actual". In my case that comes to exactly $8.99 for 1/4 pound to the east coast. Its hard to imagine that USPS charges that much. The cheap shipping for small stuff is important to me and I will order less if shipping is a minimum of $8.99.

Vito,
Send me a PM with your account information. I'll get a credit back to your card for the difference. The 4x4x4 shipping will still be valid on the new site for U.S. addresses. The salesman on the phone didn't have the latest information. Shipping charges on the new website will have several tiers based on dim weight or actual weight depending. Some items will be lower than our normal $8.99 and some will be higher because those items cost more or less to ship. It should work out quit nice. Anyway, I'll your credit processed as soon as I get your information. Sorry for the mistake on the site. We'll get it fixed.

I just lost all my cart content. Here's what happened.
I first started adding items to my cart while being totally unregistered. After I had a few items, I registered on the site. My cart content was still there, good. I proceeded to add a few more items and all was good.
I then went away from the computer a little and came back but I found myself logged out of Hobby Lobby's site (timeout probably?) I then logged back in but now my cart content is all gone! That sucks.

I believe that the previous way of doing the 3.99$ shipping price was better. The algorithm to check wether the order qualifies for 3.99$ shipping or not is obviously flawed and I believe it would be quite hard to make it perfect.
Here's an example of my cart that shows 8.99$ shipping. I tried to find the offending part but no single part triggers the 8.99$ shipping alone I believe (the FlyCamOne2 with a few parts still qualifies for 3.99$ shipping). It's rather the accumulation of parts that make some calculation reach a threshold. I think that you'll agree that my cart content should fit within a 4x4x4 box.
At the very least, I think that if the order ships in a 4x4x4 box after all, the discount should be automatically applied, like before.

It seems odd that the new website is still supposed to be Hobby Lobby, but that the shipping rules and product selection is different.
The old site had standard shipping fixed at $8.99 for any size order with the exception of the 4x4x4. The new site tiers the shipping depending on the size or weight of the item being purchased; big planes in big boxes with bigger shipping charges.
Sale items on one site don't apply to the other site. And if you add items into your shopping cart on the old site and then click to go to the bargain hangar it takes you to the new site with a totally seperate shopping cart. You can't seem to combine both carts and looks as if you would potentially end up paying two seperate shipping charges to get everything you want.
The old site has a whole selection of Atlas motors, whereas the new site has very little (I could only find the 2317). When I searched by mfg all I got was the Atlas line of esc; no motors. I suspect there are other items that didn't make it to the new website.
It really doesn't feel like a new website for the same company but a new website for a different company selling similar products. I can accept the desire for Hobby Lobby to have a new website look, but the product line and business policies have to be more consistent.

Question, why a new site with a new name? What is wrong with the old one and the name has been known for years.
Further more, why launch a new site with so much inconsistency and issues? I assume there is cost involve in building a new site, is that mean the customers are paying for it?

Brian,
hobbylobbyrc.net is a test domain. We are working hard with it to get all the kinks out and the inconsistencies gone between the new site and the old one. Very soon www.hobby-lobby.com will be using the new design (and hopefully none of the bugs). The old site will fade away...
We certainly don't want to throw away the work done over the last ten years. We have had consistent requests for features such as better search, Paypal and a navigation system that makes sense. Customer feedback has been vital and my apologies for any confusion.
Thanks to everyone that has helped us test. Stay tuned for some hopefully cool news as we get closer to launch. Without great customers it doesn't matter what kind of web site we have - we are listening to you!

The navigation is confusing, links to the reviews are missing ans a lot of helpful technical information is gone. Most importantly “Here’s everything you need” is gone! This was the single biggest reason I always bought from Hobby Lobby and why I have sent many people that way. Is Hobby Lobby going to exclusively sell RT’s in the future? The old Website was informative, helpful and top shelf. Now it just looks like another confusing generic catalog Website.

Greg,
Our apologies for any confusion. We have moved around lots of the components of the product pages but everything is still there. When you browse to a product there are tabs in the middle of the page - one of those tabs is "Everything You'll Need" which links to a list. It is one of our most popular features and we would never remove it!
Here is an example:
http://www.hobby-lobby.com/combo-acw800.htm
The review system is brand new so it will be a while before the community adds to them to completely populate the site (we have published about 20 in the last two days - both favorable and unfavorable). As for external reviews, they too will be on a tab on the product page. We will be adding literally thousands of photos that were not on the old site as well.
For any product page if there is something you want to see we are listening. We don't want our site to be just like everyone else but do want to add features like better search, PayPal and better shipping options that so many people have requested.
Thanks again for the feedback, Jay

Hello Jay,
THanks for the response.
I finally figured out where the "Here's what..." is. The problem was I ended up in the bargain hanger Website by accident and that info is not there (Compare the A-4 in both locations). You are correct that is appears in the main Website once you figure it out. Quantities however are not shown. Look for example at the ME-262, it does not say how many servo's, motors, etc.
Once you end up in Bargain Hanger limbo you can't get out. Hitting home does not help.
I realize it is a work in progress. For the time being I will keep my old catalog around.
Cheers

Damn,
I just placed an order on the new site. It took THREE tries because the shopping cart kept clearing.
Then I went to check the order status, had to relog in and ended up???
I opened a new window, re-logged in and still needed the order number to check status. What is the point of having an account if you still need the order number to check its status?
If this was my first purchase it might have been my last.
I guess the open houses sale is kind of a guinea pig discount.
I don't mean to be harsh, you guys are great and I have spent a lot of money at HL. But this not the normal HL experiece.
Greg
PS: The Bargain Hangr does not list all the planes on Sale, for example the ALFA Mig and F-86 and FSK ME-62 are on sale but not in the bargain hanger???

Here's a new one with a relatively easy fix. When you go to the bargain hangar, theres no easy navigation button to take you back to the main site. At the bottom right in relatively small font there's a hypertext for HL.com.
May I suggest a big "back to Hobbylobby.com" button near the top?
Just trying to help

We are working on the new catalog and yes it will match the web site. One of the issues with our old site was a lot of "group" pictures of parts. We are in the process of adding over 2,000 new pictures - a lot more will be going in soon.
If you see ANYTHING that could use a facelift don't hesitate to let us know.

http://www.hobby-lobby.com/tools.htm
When you try to click on the "Tip Drill with bits" to go to the product page or more info, you get right back to the Tools page.

I hope the site is still work in progress, it would be nice to have photos of all the items and all the "more info" buttons do get more info.
Looking good.

I give up. I prefered the old Hobby Lobby. This is nothing but another Tower Hobby, which I haven't used in years.
You provide nothing about the product, not like the old HL did. What prop is prefered or any other data. No one answers the telephone. Guess I'll start useing Ebay for all my purchases from now on.

George,
For almost all of the planes there is a "Everything You'll Need" tab that has a link with additional items recommended. We are working to make this more visible and to get everything moved from the old site to the new one.
The old site is still available at http://formerly.hobby-lobby.com
We are working hard to get it all right and always want specific feedback about how to improve. As you can see, we are working weekends to get it all done!
Thanks, Jay

Jay,
Regarding the "additional items recommended" info, instead of providing a link, wouldn't it be easier to just put that list of stuff on that "tab" instead of opening a new page?
Just a thought...

We are leaning that way.... (quickly based on feedback)

Jay,
I hope you didn't take my suggestion as a whining complaint (as some others seem to be doing on here). I didn't mean it that way.
To be quite honest, I've been watching the new site and looking for the equipment list ever since that tab showed up on the product page. Today was actually the first time I had noticed the link on the tab that takes you to the equipment list. If it was there before today, it just wasn't very obvious.
I know you guys are working hard and the site is coming along nicely. I'm willing to bet the folks that are griping are also complaining about having to use Vista on their new computers and stuff like that. Things change every once in a while...get used to it. Adapt people! :D
Keep up the good work, HL!

I do use Vista. I consider it a large step backwards but I use it because some of my clients use it so I have to be able to help them. I can tell you that the majority of my corporate clients do NOT use it.
How ever that has nothing to do with the HL web site. I just feel that they had a very good, well laid out site before and they have now got a piece of junk that has been put together by idiots. It is nearly impossible to find what you want without a lot of time wasted.
I see this all the time. Companies have a good system but they screw it up just to be changing for changes sake.

PS This will be my last post on this subject. I'll just let HL ruin a great site and take my business some where else..

I have Vista on several machines, very forgiving software. I haven't been on RCG for a couple of years for the exact same reason. When you take away one of the "tools", like the old HL site, data, you make people go other places for reults. They take their wallets with them.

Tom and Ragbag...
Remember to use the "unsubscribe" feature so you don't get updates about this thread anymore. At least that's two fewer people to hog the bandwidth to the HL site...faster for the rest of us now! :D

Jay,
I was checking the AXi motor calculator, that works well, i.e. give good info for motor set up., BUT the product link has some issues. In the recommended motor box, the motor link is ok, but the ESC link linked to the wrong ESC. e.g. the 40 A ESC linked to 15 amp ESC.
