UAV Challenge - Outback Rescue will take place in 2009
We are pleased to announce that the UAV Challenge - Outback Rescue will take place in 2009 in the regional Queensland town of Kingaroy. The event will take place on 28 September - 1 October 2009.
Aerospace students and enthusiasts alike will again have the opportunity to find and assist 'Outback Joe', a lost bush walker in Australia's vast outback, using UAVs.
We look forward to your continued enthusiasm and support for this event.
See you in Kingaroy!
UAV Challenge rules
The 2009 UAV Challenge rules will be similar to those of 2008. Minor adjustments will be made in the next month. When complete, the new rules document will be made available online.

Hi
perhaps you could give me an idea what sensor to use to help find "Outback Joe".
I read they are simulating the bodyheat of the dummy, but beside an IR camera I idon't know which sensors could be useful. I have never used an IR camara during daytime in a hot summer situation; does it work?

Great point Wendi,
I’ve been wondering the same things. All I can think is there will probably be a difference in temperatures between the person and the ground. During operation Iraqi “Freedom” (*international wack gesture*) Parked enemy planes would cast shadows into the ground. This would shield the ground from the sun’s heat, and change the ground temperature. After the enemy jets took off, the IR sensors would still be able to see the silhouettes of the enemy aircraft. In fact, because of the difference in temperature, the US would be able to detect the amount of time since the aircraft left the runway.
Sounds fun to play with, but as far as I know, a hand held IR camera is a bit steep as far as price goes, I hope your UAV platform is up to par ;)

Without going into too much detail right now, there is a "heat lamp" with outback Joe to simulate body heat. I will look in my OBC rules book and get the specific model and part number for you tomorrow.

Hi Chris
I have read that as well. My question is how to detect that heatsource against the presumably warm surroundings without using unaffordable, heavy and energy hungry equipment?

This thread may help.

The SAR Challenge target heat signature simulator is a Videotec IR50WFL11;

This lamp will be facing directly upward and run continuously during the SAR Challenge competiton hours.
The rules and mission for 2009 have not been released so things may differ from previous years...

Hi Mick,
Would you mind suggesting to the tech commitee they discuss assistance/support for teams on issues of export/import complience. This was a big issue for me last year.

The first meeting was held and all I can say is watch the challenge website for details, the official launch will be Avalon Airshow next month.
Things will be different..
On other news I have resigned from the committee for the 2009 competition due to work commitments clashing with the challenge committe schedule so I will have no further input into the rules e.t.c but i do expect to be there during the week of the comp.
Cheers
