There was a steamboat and a story similar to the "Catalina" up here in the western New York area. ;)
Ir was the "Canadiana", which ferried millions of passengers between Buffalo and Crystal Beach, Ontario for many years, and generated many fond memories. :)
There was a preservation effort, similar to the Catalina's, but it too ended up under the cutting torch in the scrapyard---. :p

Just a thought..
We could all donate $1 to a fund, that would create $ millions if everyone did it.. and then there could be a winning ticket draw...
Just think of all the historic things in need of funds it would benefit...
Oh.... sounds just like a 'lottery'...

I can't believe that $70,000 bought that ship while it was still functioning.
Imagine if the 'save' effort had started back then and had it turned into a museum ship with city sponsored dock and everything. Kept in running condition, it could've been used for parades and occasional paid blast from the past 'cruises'.
It's a shame that such a beautiful, historic ship is now gone when it could've been 'saved' much sooner at much less expense.

so sad. She going the way of which Finnjet went ,the cutters torch. I seam that is very very hard to save big ship and when they are saved they get changed around. Makes you wonder if scrap prices for metal rise will the SS United States be scraped.

The SS United States wasn't ever run up to her maximum speed in the years that she was in operation, as they never lit all of her boilers. ;)
Somewhere, I read that she was capable of a top speed of 43 knots---. :)
For a ship of that size, this is really moving out---. :D

Too many ships to save I suppose, LA Maritime Museum has the tug Angles Gate, an a few hundred yards away is the Lane Victory. Not enough money to save them all.
