View Full Version : Discussion Pentium 60 esc...BEC problem?

Don,
I received my pentium 60 esc yesterday and installed it in my EJF Sport Jet 70.
The motor runs fine but as soon as I hook up the esc all 4 servos immediately go to their extreme position and lock up. The TX has no control over the servos, but the motor function still works fine.
Does this sound like a bec problem? Ii hooked my Thunderbird 54 esc back up and the servos work fine again.
The only thing I changed on the programming card was the high lipo cutoff setting instead of the stock medium.
I am confused about what it is doing. I supposed I could always go with a CC external bec and keep the motor function of the pentium.

The reason I changed out the Thunderbird esc is because during my maiden flight of the SJ70 the motor continuously cut on and off the whole flight. No control issues until I could get it down, but figured the TB couldn't handle the high rpm of the mini fan.
Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. My Pentium 40 still works great in my HP F-16....just my luck here, I guess.
Thanks,
Ken

It is possible the BEC is flaky. Just for a test what if you have one servo, then two, then three. Just to see if going over a certain amount does it or does it do it with any servos.

Thanks for the reply Don.
I did what you suggested with the servos this evening.
With 4 servos hooked up...ailerons (1), rudder, NW steering, elevator....all of them go to an extreme position when the power is hooked up.
With 3 servos...same thing.
With 2 servos...same thing.
With 1 servo...I get sporadic control over the servo. At times it worked fine, then would go back and forth, extreme to extreme position.

That is odd behavior to say the least. I am thinking I could get by with a CC bec as long as the throttle control is working fine. I sure don't want to dork this plane in...it's a beauty and flies like a dream. The wires to the motor were a BEAR to get in place, so a major pain to take out again.

Not sure the best course here. The CC controllers are definitely not up to the task, so the pentiums are definitely the way to go. I don't know all the specifics on controller operations, so don't know if bypassing the bec is a good idea or not. I have never encountered an issue like this before so thought maybe I might have set something wrong, or the new switching bec thing needed some kind of setup, etc.
I appreciate your repsonse, and if you have any ideas or suggestions I am open ears.
Thanks again,
Ken

The best thing will be to send me back the ESC and I will swap it out for you. If the BEC is bad them it is possible other parts of the ESC are bad. If you disconnect the red wire you can run an external BEC but then again that assumes the rest of the ESC is not bad. How long ago did I send it to you?

Don,
Do you know when you might have some
Pentium 60s back in stock? Last I saw you were out of them. I think you are right, probably not worth risking my plane over an unknown esc issue.
Thanks,
Ken

Should be here about Tuesday. If you send it back to me now I will get about the time when the new ones arrive.
