If a buggy is what your looking for then you wont be disapointed, traxxas is a very popular name brand and parts are fairly inexpensive and available. The VXl with proper battery will be very fast & powerfull compared to brushed, if you were running with burshed before, you will be blown away with the difference.

others say it is fragile and that the rustler is better?
+isn't there a tendency for it to flip at high speeds?
(could this be solved with a wing at the front?)

It almost identical to the rustler, they mite have different setup but its still the same plastic use in their parts, so if one is fragile then the other will be also. They propably dont mean that it will break apart by looking at it, but it wont handle a 10 or 20 foot jump like some other rc's will EX; lots of youtube video of the TRAXXAS SLASH jumping like crazy in skate parks and stuff like that. Bandit is a buggy. They flip at very high speeds, yes thats because they are lite and wind will flip it front underneath the body. But if your so worried about it flipping at high speeds, because youre mostly going to be bashing in your street or parking lot, then get a on-road car design for this purpose.

Other then the traxxas mention above, I cant help you there because I dont run or bash with on-road cars. I only mention that one because its a Traxxas, they are reputable brand name and I have always own a Traxxas for over 15 years, I cant complain.

are you just looking at electrics or is nitro an option to, because if so, i have an HPI nitro rs4 3evo and its a great car and very fast (if you want an onroad car)

Just electrics. Nitro is to dirty and high mantenance.
But petrol may be an option as well because it's quite cheap

is there any one out there who owns or has owned both (rustler / Bandit) and can give a comparison?

I think you would be better off going to the Traxxas forums and asking there as there are many people there that can help.

I have the Ruslter VXL and my friend got his son the Bandit for X-mas... he has the XL5.. not too bad for a little cheap electric buggy.. His kid had a crash within the first 5 minuted of running and broke the right front arm and shock tower.. granted it was 20 degrees outside so the plastic was a bit brittle.. I gave him one of my spare RPM towers and extra arm from the Rustler and he was running again in about 15 mintutes.. The two cars are pretty much the same.. I doubt the Rustler would have broken in that crash due to the tires being under the body.. But it was a full speed run straight into a curb.. I wouldn't try anything brushless with the Bandit... Its too light and will constantly flip.. the Rustler is better for that..

Mighty mouse... if you are going to be running at a track, then the bandit might be a better choice.. for bashing the Rustler will be better hands down.. I've only broken 1 shock cap and right rear arm in 5 years of owning various ones.. they are very tough.. not the best racers, but very strong..
As for nitro being dirty and high maintanance, maybe a bit more than electric, but I run both as well as Gasoline 1/5th scale and I don't find the nitro tough at all.. IF the engine is tuned properly, they are trouble free... as far as dirt goes, I'm very anal when it comes to these so I clean all of them completely after running... they all look new when I'm done.. If you want to run and thats it, go with electric.. its easier in that respect...

Actually, the Rustler's wheels are nor under the body. They are in a Slash but they are just as exposed and without an RPM bumper, you would most likely break an arm in a head-on collision.

Your right.. I didn't have enough coffee yet this morning.. I was thinking about some of the other cars I have.. I wouldn't waste the money on the RPM bumper, never needed it and have crashed the VXL a few times..
