We all like to see boats lit up for night time sailing, so what have you done to your boats.

Show us all your pics, with name of boat. It doesn't have to be a shot taken on the water.

Anyway, here's mine.

The sailboat (sorry Kmot) is Rafale Atlantique, a Graupner University Club RTR converted to 4channel operation with side lights and a stern light.

The cargo ship is Gemini, a Graupner Neptun, she has 6 companionway lights, bow light, mast head light, stern light and side lights, she's the first ship i lit up.

In the foreground of the pic is Nord Icelandia, my current project. at this stage she has 2x sidelights, bow light, mast light, stern light, special ops lights, (they are the red-white-red lights on the side of the mast), a blue interior light in the superstructure and a deck light on the aft block.

All it needs is the circuit from a radio shack light organ and a small mp3 player.
Then the LED will dance to the music. :p

looking good :),

though under way your bridge would be as dark as possible so you dont get reflection on the glass which would make it impossible to see where you're going, (try looking out of your kitchen window at night with the light turned on, then do the same again with the kitchen light turned off).

Thats my anchored lights. I won't be inside the bridge when running at night. I want to make sure I am going to see it from the shore. How is that for an excuse?

That's no excuse, there have been invented decklights for being able to see your model at distance at night.
I will try to find out what it will look like tonight with the decklight (only 1) on at the Well Enhancer, and see what it will do.
I think decklights will give enough light in the right direction (when you use enough, and they are bright enough) to see where your model is, and also what is surrounding the model.

If that isn't enough, add interior lights, majorly the ones on the desks, will shine more directly to your fase, but as water reflects the light very well i don't think that will be needed.

Nord Icelandia's internal light comes from the back face of the LED's, only really notable when viewed from the front. my bridge will never get lit up, its a bit difficult to light up 2x1 pine from the inside

tweety777
Mar 16, 2009, 06:27 PM
Here's a photo of Well Enhancer with only 1 decklight on, not on the water, 1 engine has died, so couldn't sail with her, so add the water with the reflection of the light on it yourself and you see that lights inside the bridge aren't needed.

Added red light to bridge of my tug, and changed out the incandescent bulb in the Calypso in the bridge to a red LED. Exposure time on my camera makes it look much brighter than it really is.

A good tripod, low ISO-number and long shutter-time will do the job.
This is impossible to do without a tripod, as the shuttertime needs to be too long.

josse, thats fine for an slr, however my camera is pocket sized compact, that would probably fit inside a cigarrette packet.

I remember his old one. I had to change my glasses prescription as a result. I thought he accidentally picked it up by mistake. :)

Higher ISO speeds = grain and washout. Lower ones, with longer shutter speeds, even with a tripod, will result with light streaking with even the smallest of ripple on the water. You had a tough assignment at that low of light.

Just being me, Ghost. No harm meant. :o

Not wanting to hijack this thread too much, but do modern digital cameras have infinite shutter time? Mine has only a range that is not long enough in some cases. The camera is a Fuji Finepix S5700. Is there a work around, or do you just have a really nice camera.
I'm beginning to miss my 35mm film camera more and more.

I actually passed a similar Fuji to the kids (longest shutter: 4sec)... Get something serious (not that expensive though) like Nikon D series. Makes a HUGE difference, especially in full manual mode. A starter D60 will go under 500Euro, I am sure it will be MUCH cheaper in the US...

I got these shots tonight after I got all my lights installed on my little tuna fishing boat. The lights are LED's cast into poly. resin. I got them from Umi Ryuzuki. They work great, I think I want to increase the resistors for the running lights as they are quite bright. The white work lights are on a switch that turns them on and off from the TX. Pretty cool if I do say so myself.

Cheers,
