View Full Version : Discussion Split elevator pull-pull system?

Its time to ask the experts. Regarding aircraft with "split elevators" and pull pull cables running to each half of the elevater, such as the Curtiss Jenny, SE5A etc., is it possible to run the cables directly to a servo, if that servo is mounted to one side of the fuselage? Would this cause binding due to offset or Ackerman? I've seen pictures of some setups which appear to use a tiller bar sticking out through both sides of the fuselage with the elevator cables attached to the tiller arms (such as on a Ford trimotor) and with the tiller bar rotated by a pushrod from the servo arm, which would keep cable lengths and angles equal, but I remember seeing pictures of a Sopwith Triplane build, where the cables from both sides of the elevator run forward and attach directly to the servo arm of a servo mounted towards the side of the fuselage (two servos, one for elevator, one for rudder, mounted next to each other). If memory serves me it was a Peter Rake design, so there must be something to it. Has anyone ever tried this?
