Hi,

Has anyone actually built this as a pusher?? I'm doing one as a glow pusher, and wanted to know if anyone has done this as an electric pusher...

Thanks

Yeah, I did mine as a pusher. Used a PJS inline twin 550 contra, but to be fair the ultimate setbe up for this would eddiegigowatts 18 with the same motor but he added thrust vectoring! There is a Build Log in My Blog Area for this conversion and it includes the info to Eddie's video.

Mark-

Yellow, I've built most of the Combat Models jets and I'd really strongly recommend that you don't do it glow. They run real hot without the propwash and you'll be adding a lot of weight to the tail! Check my blog, there are pix of some of my builds but under the A-10 conversion (work in progress) I show the pound + of lead I had to the nose! If you do insist on staying glow, I'd suggest a YS.45 or similar. Make sure it is pumped or the long fuel lines are going to cause it to go lean at times...

MYC,

Thanks very much for the input! That's cool that you've done the whole Combat Models thing. I used to practically live at their shop back in the early 90's. I built the second production F-16N, second only to Byron's. In fact, I'm the one who first introduced Combat Models to the Y.S. .45 engine! Oh, the memories....

Anyway, yeah, I'm pretty set on doing this as a glow pusher with a Y.S. .45 rear exhaust. A friend of mine pulled his old F-16N out of storage and brought it back to life after 12 years in hybernation. His son, who was 1 year old and in the way a lot when he was building the plane, is now my 'jetting' student on the same plane at 13 years old. He also has the CM F-18 and was thinking about building it, but I got him into a Yellow Aircraft F-18 instead.

What I'm really curious about is whether or not anyone has successfully installed retracts into the Haoye F-18, and how they mounted the engine. I can design it myself, but I thought I'd see what others have done first. I will glass the entire airframe and have an 8 pound bird when I'm done. I hope.

Ha! I'm in the process of "electrifying" my 12+ year old F-16N! I picked up a BP Hobbies 3520-6 a 77amp Opto ESC and a Zippy 5s 5000 Batt.

The only CBM plane I didn't get was the 18. How did Byron attach the motor in that one? Considering the absolute engineering brilliance he showed in the 16's engine mount, I'd imagine that his method on the 18 would work here too. Mounting L/G should be a piece of cake for us pusher guys, there is a nice big hatch in the bottom.

Good luck and post pictures. I'd love to see them!

I have just finished a depron foam XL PUSHER PROP ELECTRIC F18. It flys really gently and I put landing gear on it so it can take off and land. Floats in on landing. Cheap to build and look good too. Used a Turnigy Aerodriv xp sk series 42-50 1150 w motor. Am getting a bigger motor though for more speed and acrobatic flight. Had an APC 12 x 10 prop and 100 amp speed controller. Only pulling about 70 amps on 6 cell lipos. Here are a couple of pics, finished with epoxy resin and paint in Diamond back scheme. cheers.

Hi Yellow,

i'm building an Hayoe F-18 as electric pusher.
I've started a thread into an italian forum (http://www.baronerosso.net/forum/aeromodellismo-turbine-e-ventole/104211-f-18-haoye.html) and i'm about to started one also here, on rcgroups.

I'll install flyfly retracts and at the moment i'm covering wings and fuselage whit fiberglass (50 g/dm2).

In the next days i'll post some photos.

I can't wait for your thread...I want to build a Haoye pusher as well. Who did you order from?

To Kd12587...how fast was your XL F-18 with old motor...how much does it weigh?? I would be nice to find a pusher motor combo for a fiber glassed Haoye (6lb range) that can get it going near 100 MPH (160 KMH) straigh/lever and still have unlimited vertical (greater than 6lbs static thrust) with 5s or 6s

I was at Byron's shop one day while he was designing the prototype....he was all secretive about it!!!!! I believe it was mounted semi inverted with cylinder mounted at 8-0-clock and muffler mounted at 4 o-clock...so they were hidden in the exhaust nozzles.

I would really recommend electric power for this model....but i understand it cost a lot $700 US min for power setup and a couple batts. If you have a glow engine sitting there.........

This plane would be OVERPOWERED by the setup I am using for my CBM-16. For the 16 I have a Balsa Products BP 3520-6 on a 70amp Speed control spinning a 13x7 off of a Zippy 5s1p 5000. The whole power system costs less than a comparable 40sized engine. I didn't glass mine and it is 4lbs AUW.

I'm sorry for the delay...at the moment my fuc@#** work doesn't let me 1 hour of free time to work on my F-18
I ordered mine here: http://alshobbies.com/shop/cat.php?id=585&Desc=
The shop is based in UK.

Hi,

Who are you, High Alpha? I notice you're in O'side. It was fun hanging out in Byron's shop, huh? Those were the days....

I wonder if the Haoye F-18 is similar to the Kondor F-18. I don't think the Kondor comes with landing gear though.

kondor...KMP, right? I think they are the same model. There is actually one more name that it sells under that I can't remember right now. In the original D/F thread the guys there talked about them...

Hey Yellow...I'm no one special. I was a self described hot shot RC-kid..bout 16 back in those days...33 now...time flys! I just met Byron and Doug flying the RCs at the Miramar airshows. I was flying a Black/White CG Ultimate Bipe back in those days. I did some 1/4 scale racing in Madera for a couple years...and 40 size warbird racing. I think Byron gave me a deal on an A-10...just so i would stop coming by and bugging them! I flew in north county SD clubs...Poway pilots, Poway Lake Skimmers, Lakeside Weedwackers, Palomar Flyers. Got to know John Gorham "RIP" (GMP helicopters), as he had retired in Carlsbad. He taught me to fly a GMP legend...so did a little heli stuff. never got into ducted fanss or turbine jets. Not currently in any clubs...just starting to get back into it...and loving the electric stuff. Guess I should put this in my bio and stop hijacking threads!

BTW thanks MYC/Falcon 5 for clearing up the KMP/Haoye F-18 thing. I have a person who responded to a wanted add for a Haoye..and said KMP is the same...so now I know. I will still confirm with pictures! The pics yu included seems to prove they are identical...mold part-lines and such...and overall lines look to similiar to not be copies.

One big difference is that KMP is still trying to get $199 for one and others are available for $119

Alpha,

Cool. Thanks for the bio. Follows my own somewhat. I was a club member at Palomar for a while, too. I used to be the manager of Discount Hobby Warehouse, back when it was huge an on Convoy Court. What are you flying these days?

I mostly fly a suped-up Easy Star (ailerons, full CF spars, BL motor, 3s pack) off the bluffs in Carlsbad during lunch...smoked the motor last week after a year of good service....I have a lot of fun with that Easy Star...so relaxing not having to worry about messing up a nice plane! I do horrible things to that plane just to make myself laugh. My wife got me an E-Flite Blade CP+ for Xmas, so i am having fun with the Heli stuff as well. I have a glassed GWS A-10..pusher under construction. My CBM A-10 is waiting for a BL pusher as well. Maybe i should finish the CBM A-10 before I move onto the big-foamy F-18 (since it has been sitting for 15 years!). I just want to make sure I get one of the F-18s before they are really hard to find. I wish someone would use the same mold to make some EPP F-18s

I remember the old...big Discount Hobbies on CC. I spent a lot of hours in there as a kid. I raced on the indoor oval a couple times...but I was getting out of the cars around that time. Now i am getting back into the Off Road RC cars as well...just for fun. Just bought a Traxxas Slash.

Yeah, from your lips in sunny California to God's ears my friend. It's freezing in NY today but there is hope for tomorrow. I hear it'll be a balmy 40 degrees. Might break out the shorts and lawn chair to go fly my raptor... Of course there is still several inches of snow on the ground! The snow makes belly landings more fun!

Well, I'm home now... The link is to Chuck's Hobbies but he now lists it at $149. Guess I waited too long to order #2 and now its gone up 30bones. Anyway, someone was asking for an unpainted version a few posts back. I had a link here for x-flite who lists the unpainted version for the same $149... Still, this is $50 less than KMP...

Thanks for the info Mark. I put an email into Chucks a week or so ago...to see if they still had unpainted ones...no reply. I will check out the x-flite site. I also found a private party that will sell a KMP f-18...unpainted NIB for $150. $119 whould have been nice... They would have sold more if they had a cheap version (<$100) without the fans and gear...just for pusher setup.

There is a link on the previous page to Al's hobbies in the UK http://alshobbies.com/shop/cat.php?id=585&Desc= and they list the Haoye F-18 for 50 pounds...which Google says is $70 US. I emailed them as well...no response. I wonder what shipping would be on the slow boat from the UK???

Falcon5-- Any more photos of your F-18's? They really look great. Did you fiberglass or is it plain old foam? Nice. I'm ordering one. Can't resist after seeing your photos.

MYC-- I'm thinking of going with a 96mm Himark/Himax/(EasyTiger?) fan with an as yet unknown 36mm motor. I have a few 3700mah packs that need a home.

This plane is bigger than the Starmax 90mm Hornet. Whatever power system you intend, try to power it 6s minimum or you may be disappointed. When I did my inline pusher, it was a test of concept. My plane is not fast. It does have enough power to produce a scale airshow-like flight but without the screaming passes. For it's "lightness" the 90mm jet screamer makes good power. I don't know how it matches up against the 96mm fan but the choice of batt is going to be important either way...
