You may wish to try some Model Warship Combat websites, they have
articles etc. how to make (and control!) guns fired using compressed
air.

If you are looking to have the sound and smoke but not the hassle of
having to re-load it each time. Why not construct the gun out of
standard construction model ply or balsa, and then use a smoke
generator and sound system.

Yikes... a working Bofors 40mm ? Hmmm ?Here are links to it's
appearance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bofors_40_mm_gun Though I'm
sure you already know.I'd agree that the difficulty in rigging a model
gun to fire blanks would be extreme... it would be more simply solved
with compressed air and effectsCheck this link for a guy who did .50
cal guns in 1/20th.. you might contact him:
http://www.pt-boat.com/50CAL/browning-50-cal.htmlAn impressive
engineering / modelling problem... I WISH YOU LUCK !!
