Hello all, Just received the interface cord so that i can use the FMS simulator. I loaded up the program and when i tried to play the computer i loaded it on is alittle old and it was going very slow. I was not able to use it because the was moving as slow as a snail. anyone have any ideas how to make it run faster???? what if i run it in Msdos?????? also tried to hook it up to a faster computer that run Microsoft XP and i could not use the radio transmiter to control the plane. I guess the computer could not access the parrell port???? anyone have any ideas?????
when i use my Jr controller to fly the simulator is there anything i should do so that it is not harmed, anything to look out for????

thanks for all the help

Lots of questions :

Slow running is usually means you need a better video card but if the PC is very old there may be nothing you can do. Try switching some of the graphics options off.

FMS 2.07 doesn't run in MSDOS

There are interface specified for Win XP (PIC serial i/f) but if you didn't get one of those it won't work in XP. XP prevents direct access to the ports.

With a JR transmitter just plug the lead in, don't switch it on. That stops it transmitting.

try turning off fog and going to a lower Resolution, also go to the download page and get beta 6 instead of the most recent 7. I cannot get 7 to run on my laptop with any speed, but 6 runs fast at a slightly lower resolution.

Fms won't work xp for the parallel port, you have to use a usb cord on xp. Af far as speed try changing the full window resulostion settings in fms and try tinkering with the other settings.

Bigdog,

At home I run FMS on a lowly 525MHz PC. I used to have a 3DFX video card and FSM was virtually unusable. Without changing the CPU or memory but just swapping to an nVidia based "modern" video card (cost me about $100) I then found that the frame rate was as fast as you could need for smooth simulation (it had a major impact on things like MS FS2002, CFS2, Fly! etc. as well!)

So, if I were you, I'd look at upgrading the video card.

I’m running on an older K-6/2 @ 400; my graphics card is an ATI 3-D Rage Pro. FMS works pretty good (fun) with fog and textures turned off.

I too am thinking about doing a video card upgrade; is 64meg needed, or can I cheap out with 32?

Thinking about going for an ATI All In Wonder 7500, its supposed to be able to make MPGs from an analog source; an comments?

Goto www.tcwo.com . They have great prices and shipping is cheap. I've used them almost exclusively. You CAN get better prices, but I'm promoting them cause I've had great luck with them.

As far as what card to buy. That completley depends on what your going to do with it. If it is for up to date games, then you'll want at least 64 mb on the card and stick with ATI or NVIDIA. NVidia is just the chipset on the cards so you will find many different makers of cards based on thier chips.

If all you want to do is use fms, then go with the TNT2 M64 32MB 4X AGP OEM.

Of course I assume you have an AGP slot on your motherboard.

Any more questions, I'll do my best to help.

Good luck,
Rob

Thanks Rob!

Yes an AGP slot; though its only spec 1.0. Will that be OK? The Rage Pro is 2X.

There's a lot of FMS info as well as video card info in the Simulators forum:
