I am looking into purchasing a 30% (50cc, 87 inch, or whatever metric you want to use) plane. I like all of the Extra models including the 260s, 300s, and 330s. I would also consider an Edge 540 or Yak 54 if there was a compelling reason to get one of those over the Extras. This is my first plane of this size and I am looking for advice on which BRAND and MODEL I should get. This plane will be electric and the easier to build the better. To date I have only built a couple helis and a Hanger 9 Sundowner 50.

So far I am considering the AeroWorks Extra 260 (http://www.aero-works.net/store/detail.aspx?ID=275) , the AeroWorks Extra 300 (http://www.aero-works.net/store/detail.aspx?ID=330), the Dietrich Extra 260 (http://www.dietrichaircraft.com/50ccExtra260/50ccExtra260.php), and at the top of my list is the 3DHobbyShop Extra 300 SHP (http://www.3dhobbyshop.com/detail.aspx?ID=2280).

Any advice on these or other planes to consider and/or steer clear of from you more experienced pilot will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Personally would have to say the 3DHS 87" Extra. Big time fun and stability. Airframe makes you way too comfortable down low. :) Very strong and lite airframe. Very floaty feeling to it with/without SFG's on. Whichever powerplant you choose for this bird, it won't matter. Flies great on electric or gas. My 2 cents.

Thanks for your 2 cents, edfrules. One of the reasons I am favoring the 3DHS model is because it has substantially more wing area than the others which I assume is what gives it the floaty feeling you are talking about.

I think the model in yellow and black looks hot! The plane doesn't look bad either. :)

Seriously though, these look like really nice planes too. I haven't ever seen them before but I will add them to my list. Thanks bsipro.

I just completed my order for the Pilot 87" Extra 260.

They include carbon fiber front and rear landing gear, CF wing and tail wing tubes, and CF spinner upgrades for free. In addition, for only $45, you can design your own custom design scheme. This includes painting the cowl and wheel pants. How cool is that!?

All of that for about $750 (including shipping from China) seems like a fair deal on a nice plane to me.

So far I am very impressed with Pilot-RC. Tony (the sales mngr/president) was very responsive to email and basically said "we can do that" to every one of my questions. He even offered to send me photos of them building it!

I plan to document my build online so keep your eyes peeled.
