I was out goofing around in the street when I noticed the flashing red
light on my transmitter telling me I was about to have no juice. Not
having any more AAs, or wanting to buy anymore, I decided to convert
it to NiCds. I didn't have any AA cells sitting around, but I did have
a 9.6v toy RC type pack handy, so I tore the Tx open, unsoldered the
battery box, added Deans Ultra connectors (overkill, but they were
handy and standardization is a good thing), and put it back together.
Works perfect, pack fits with room to spare for the connectors, and no
more buying bloody AAs every week! To charge I can either plug a slow
charger into the Tx charge jack or pull the pack out (in less time
than it takes to find the slow charge cable in this mess ;), cycle it,
and fast charge it on the PF-12.

I buy AA Alkalines from Superstore for approx $7.50US for 40. They've lasted
months and months in my radios (2PHKA's). At that price is almost pointless
to buy rechargables especailly when i have several radios and wanna run them
at the same time (friends). I do wonder how well they would last in a XS3 or
other computer radios... they probably drain quicker. My biggest problem is
forgetting to turn off my damn radio.... next time i'm looking at the radio
and the light is blinking and i haven't taken the car out in a few days... i
hate that. Rechargables would have been handy then..

That's a great idea. However, all the 9.6 batt packs I've ever seen were set up
like this:
ll ll ll ll
ll ll ll ll

My radio batt compartment needs a AA battery pack set up like this:
ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll

I have a couple chargers dediated to those 9.6 packs, it would be very
convenient to use 9.6 packs in my TX's.
Let me know where you found that In-Line set up, and who makes them.
I would like to get some.
Like quite a few....
Hmmm... I just checked... betweem my nitro & electric cars, nitro & electric
boats, and one plane... I got 7 pistol-grip, and one stick-control radio.
Sheesh... Im addicted to R/C...;-)

That's easy, Futaba makes 'em for most of the aircraft radios. Have
one in my Super 8.

I just use my peak charger since it can handle up to 12 cells, but the
radio chargers work fine, too.

The 2PHKA uses a battery arrangement like the 9.6v toy batteries, so
that was easy. Of course you could always tear one apart, yank off the
tabs, and rebuild the pack in the right configuration. I do that all
the time with sub-C packs.

I only have 3, 2 pistol and 1 stick, but the stick radio has a
buttload of memory as well as CAMPAC modules and I'm about to buy a
pistol grip computer radio that uses CAMPACs so I can lighten up the
pit box a bit. Hmm... if I got bored I could put the RF module from
the new surface radio in the aircraft radio and use it to control a
robot of mass destruction ;) Have to buy an 8 channel receiver on 75
mhz, but Futaba has those.
