I currently fly a Thermal Dancer. To avoid adverse yaw, one has to use aileron differential or aileron to rudder mix (nothing new there). But the question is, how do I determine the amount of each for the best L/D in a turn?

On my current setting I'm not using any aileron diff. and I have +or- 25mm rudder mix (total rudder throw is + or- 50mm). I have used 20% aileron differential and 15mm on the rudder mix and this works fine too. I have read what I could find on this topic and watched Paul N. DVDs, but I still have not figured out how I can determine what the best amount of each to use for any given sailplane. John

Do a search for some posts by Mark Drela on differential. (maybe someone has the links to those posts??) I too have a Thermal Dancer and had differential. Took out most if not all of the differential and added rudder mix. Works great. I don't remember the amounts off the top of my head and it's been a while since I last flew. If you want more info let me know and I'll take a look at the settings tomorrow. CG also has big effect on the way it turns. I had mine too far aft.

I officially disabled my rudder/aileron mix on my XP-5 DLG this past weekend....I've been meaning to do this all last season...it just got in my way.
I use manual inputs for my rudder and cross control ailerons.

I also, as per Drela instructions, use no aileron differential.

It's taken me awhile, but I now have command of my left thumb for rudder.

I don't like the mix, but as a full-scale sailplane pilot I understand when to use rudder. It took a while to recognize the issue and train myself to use the left stick correctly, but once you get used to it, it becomes second nature.
