Ok guys.. we are having a little run at Balboa lake on Dec. 20th... around 9:00ish... everyone is invited... no mater what kinda of ship or what scale! if it floats bring it!

I've been running there weekly but I'm the only one. I've never seen another boat there besides mine. To crowded and busy at HD for me these days.

A great subject to model there, the Ward. Outside the entrance to Pearl Harbor, she engaged and sank one of the Japanese 2-man midget submarines that was part of the attacking force. Ward's second shot hit the small sub at the starboard base of the conning tower, dooming it and its' two crewmen. Ward reported in her action, thus giving the alarm to those up the line, but nothing effective was done to alert the naval base, the air fields, or the army bases, so later the main attack unfolded as planned. Ward and her crew behaved commendably that day.

Joe, great pictures!!! I love the old stuff and that 4 piper looks great. I like the way you have it here, but I can understand why you would want it like it was at Pearl. I have seen pictures of a model of the Ward attacking the mini sub in a dark blue color scheme, is that right??

yes tim.......the ward was pulled out of the red lead line in jan. of 41 refitted and repainted in the sea blue........

Speaking of the red lead line, I used to have a great picture of the reserve fleet in Phily between the wars. It had ALOT of 4 pipers all bunched together. Does anyone have that picture and if so can someone post it please. Thanks

I have seen pictures of a model of the Ward attacking the mini sub in a dark blue color scheme, is that right??well as we know the USS WARD is a very famous ship SHE FIRED THE FIRST SHOT after doing a lot of research on the ward she was decomissioned on july 21 1921 i suspect she was wearing the large unshaded numbers when she was placed in the red lead row most other ships iv'e look up had the large shaded numbers applyed sometime between 1921 thru 1923 the ward was taken out of RLR late 1940 refitted then commissioned back to the fleet jan 15th 1941....all the photos iv'e seen in black and white it's impossable to tell if she was dark grey or sea blue i recall my dad stating there were a lot of grey and blue ships in the harbor (my dad was stationed at ford island NAS before the attack) untill i get proof of color my best guess the ward was blue.....i also suspect the ward never carried the large shaded numbers....ahhhhh research i love it......
