im new to the scene. i'm wondering how much the wind effects the different types of planes and which handle well in extreme conditions. im using the fs one sim. a reason for me to know, is the crosswinds during the the landings. how much wind is too much?

That is a tough question to answer, that's like asking how high is high?

Handling an airplane on landing in a crosswind depends on a number of things such as; what is the angle of the crosswind in relation to the runway, what is the cross section of the airplane your flying, wind speed, and what is it's landing speed, and what are the pilot's skills? For more dramatic crosswind landings you can be inputing a lot of cross control.

Yeah it's a very subjective question. Also depends on the size of the plane.

I can't decide how much is too much myself... depends on what I'm in the mood for and whether I'm "feeling up to it" as far as flying in really high winds.

There's been times when I was flying in just crazy wind and totally relaxed and enjoying the additional challenge and other times (most times) really high winds just makes me shudder mostly.

Under 5 m/s is best for most people and it's the weather that I prefer to fly in usually.

If you're just starting out shoot for those calm days when it's at about 2 m/s. So much easier and very nice flying when it's not being kicked around.

As the days vary you'll get a feel for what you're comfortable with.

And a good thing to keep in mind is, if you go out to the field and it doesn't feel right, their's always another day. If I feel like that I might just chill and watch others, see how their planes are handling and then maybe the feeling changes.

In FSOne btw, edit the prop on the trainer plane to APC 11x6 (also on the P-51). By default it comes set up with the EVO trainer prop which changes the handling quite a bit. If you do not plan on using an EVO prop on the real plane, then you don't want to get accustomed to the EVO's handling because it's really different from an average prop.
