View Full Version : Discussion What is the largest ARF giant electric plane currently available?

The largest available giant electric ARF that I can find is the SIG Rascal 110", which is currently sold at Esprit Model. This seems to be a gas/glow plane that is fairly easy to convert to e-power.
There are certainly e-gliders with bigger wingspans, but I am looking for information on "regular style” giant e-powered planes.
I am more focused on wingspan than overall weight or aerobatic performance, with no requirement for, or aversion to, scale models. But I’ll take any information on the topic that you might have.

There are many very large ARF's that can be converted to electric, but the largest ARF that I know of that is specifically marketed to be powered by electric motors (and other engines) is the 106" Hangar 9 Piper Cub.

I think bigbobed has found the biggest, 1/2 scale Cub, 180" wingspan, will be tough to top. Ive seen a video of one but I didnt know it was an arf :eek:

Wow. Totally overkill servo install on the flying surfaces on that Cub. You'd think it was a 3D aircraft with 50° surface deflection and huge control surfaces. Hehe

The hanger 9 Cub flies easily on electric power especially with an 63 by 74 mm Turnigy motor swinging a 20 inch prop on 6/3900 Rhino Lipoly (2 3 packs in series). It can be as gentle as you want but if you want something a little larger in wing area that flies like a dream take a look at the following: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=898920 . The Jenny has much more wing area and flies very well with the 80 by 85 mm Turnigy. Prop is a touch bigger at 22 inches. Power is 12/3700 Rhino Lipoly (3 4 packs in series). Weight is about 26 pounds and wings are easily removable. Both are a hoot to fly and easily built or should I say "assembled". Both use a 100 amp Turnigy ESC. ed

All very interesting information - thanks. It is safe to say, however, that a 50% scale plane is a bit beyond what I would consider converting to electric power!

Almost any ARF can be converted to electric power, with the equipment and technology available now. Just find the biggest ARF that you can, and I'll bet someone can figure out a way to make it fly with electric power.
My biggest one is a Senior Telemaster, but at 94 inches, it isn't even close to as large as you could go. It is a very good, easy to equip, and easy to fly electric model.

I'll bring my Cub to IGG meetings next year, so that can be arranged!
Just to keep the thread on topic, the plane can easily bee electrified with a hacker A150 or preferably A200 and a spin 200 or 300. One could also easily power it with hobbycity lipos, you can have a 15s 9800 mah battery for less than $400 or 15s 14700 mah for less than $600. That means a complete electric power system would cost the same as a 170 cc engine with canisters etc.
Access to batteries would not be a problem through the big side door or top hatch.
I thought of going electric with mine, but I went gas since it's used for towing airplanes.

I easily converted a 1/3 Scale ( 120" ) clipped wing CUB from World Models. I use a 7000 watt Turnigy motor ( I actually run it around 3200 ), Castle 110 HV, and 10s 5000 MAH Fullymax 30c batteries from Sureflite. Spins a 24x10 for 15-18 minutes of fully aerobatic flight. I have not tried to hover or do the crazy stuff, but I am sure it would if I went to 12s.

That Turnigy motor now working out Brad. You had problems with it just like mine didn't you?
Are these the standard Turnigy motors or are they the SK line? I've heard nothing but great things with the SKs, as they're as efficient, or more so, than the big brands.

Is there any white trim on the bottom of the wings and stab? I'm building the Sig 1/3 scale and like the red/white color scheme.

Hi Ditchit!
I ended up re-gluing the magnets into the bell with metal based JB weld, and have not had any problems since. The epoxy they used looked thin as water.
There is no white trim on the bottom- just the white struts.

Not the biggest but a little different visit www.glensmodels.com for their 111" Maule Skyrocket. On the other hand if you want a large KIT go to www.btemodels.com and look at the 132" Super Flyin' King. Both are for i/c motors but I am sure they would convert well to electric.

I thought that I would complete this thread with a photo of the "giant electric plane" that I recently put through its maiden flights. As you see, I decided on an electric conversion of a SIG Rascal 110. This plane will do nicely for now, but I will eventually get one of those large scale planes mentioned earlier in the thread.
The Rascal is a lot of fun to fly. It can do just about any basic aerobatic maneuver, and it can be flown pretty darn fast. It lands a little on the fast side (no flaps), but that is not much of a problem. And with the power system that I installed, it climbs vertically right off the ground on take-off ...that is quite a sight!

Do you have a link to any info on the Hyperion Extra 180e? I found the 120e on the All e RC website, but no specs on it.

Let me know if you want a quiet tow. ;) I am electrifying a 126" 3DHS Slick with Plettenberg Predator 37/6, Spin 300 and Hyperion G3 7s 5500 35C for 14s 11Ah and 16.5aH.
I hope to bring it to some IMAC and electric events in Norway this year.

I've been discussing with my self to sell the 50% cub and buy a 60% and electrify it.
The problem is I can't find any electric motor in the 300cc class, biggest i can find is in the 200cc class, like the one you're going to use in the 3DHS slick. Any ideas?

I think a gearbox and two motors might be the only option as of now. Even if there was a single motor, I do not think there is any ESC that will do over 300 amps. Your really do not want to go over 15s, because you risk killing yourself if you are unlucky and get electricuted... :rolleyes:
I think the Plettenberg Predator 37 or a Hacker A200 would give scale power for a 60% cub, but I might be incorrect.

That's what I think as well. I do not want to go the route with more than one motor. I'm also sure the A200 would give scale power, but scale power is rather boring, is it not?
Well, we'll se what the future brings. You're 45 cent electric slick will be.....slick! ;-) Looking forward to be aerotowed by a electric in that size. I had an electric towplane earlier, it sure draws some attention.

Do you have some links with information on how to set up a tow system? I guess I need a hook of some sort, but I have never done it. I think I will put one on either my 126" Slick or 103" Extra.

Well, based on the original question, the Rascal is sure a nice plane, big, but not complicated. If you want a WWII plane that is extra large, then there is the Skyshark P-40 at 82" wingspan. The Sierra rotating retracts make the plane expensive, but, you will be a hit when it comes to the field.

It is worth noting in this thread that Hobby Lobby is apparently preparing to offer an ARF version of the 12-foot Telemaster. No word yet on price or other details. Some photos of a prototype flown at SEFF can be found at the link below. Looks like this ARF Telemaster may have flaps.
