Hello,
I had purchased Real Flight 4.0 and subsequently downloaded the 4.5 upgrade from the Internet. The latest upgrade is supposed to provide a more realistic simulation with various sound effects. But I found that the sounds of the landings are terribly unrealistic and too loud as well. Instead of a gentle thud sound upon touch down, the plane would land as if it is a jerry can or a wooden crate hitting the ground.
Anyone know whether this sound can be adjusted or even turned off completely as it is killing my enjoyment of this otherwise excellent simulator.
Thanks.

Yeah I hate the 4.5 update, I went back to 4.0 asap. My computer has good spec's to and it made my pc act funny. When I'd crash my pc would freeze. 2GB ram, nvidia 8800GT with 512 ram, 4000+AMD cpu. more than enough. well actually about right. I think 4.5 is just buggie.

I am thinking of doing likewise as I also found my PC (which also has good specs) a bit "jerky" after upgrading to 4.5. Do you uninstall the whole 4.5 and then reinstall the 4.0 with all the various extension packs all over again? Thanks.

Thats the only way I found was to uninstall the the whole thing, which only took a few seconde to uninstall.
Looooeeee!

Are RFG4.4's sound files present in a folder off of the game install?
If they are, try opening them with Windows sound recorder and see if they are .WAV wave files, and if they are, see what kind of .WAV file they are.
See if are they a Stereo 8 bit 22.000 Hz. file or whatever. You can edit .wav file with Sound Recorder. If they might be MP3 files you'll need a MP3 compatible editor and I'm not sure if there is any likely freeware MP3 editors.

I upgraded from 4 and have not had similar results. I think the landing sounds are very realistic. I think checking the sound system is a good idea. I use a Creative Labs Audigy sound card with the latest drivers.
I wouldn't condem the update with out looking at your sound system. The output depends on the chipset your using, and keeping your drivers up to date so they can utilize the new software.

I think it might depend on the AC also.
When I touch down with the Albatross or a DR I and hear the drumming sound of the covering over wood I grin every time because it sounds exactly like that at the field. :)
Many AC have a generic sound though, engines, motors, and I'm sure many of the sound files are shared over many AC.
I love RF though, my first version was 4.5 so I can't compare to earlier versions.
It runs like butter on my machine, as it should(9450 QC @ 3.5, dual 8800GT cards in SLI).

Thanks for all the advice, guys. I have just tried the Albatross and DR I on both hard runway (Gold Country Aeromodeler Park) and grass surface (Nimabry Airport). Unfortunately, both planes still sound like an oil drum hitting the ground even when I land gently. I have a few flight simulators, including AFPD, Reflex and Phoenix. Notwithstanding this landing sound problem, I must say that Realflight is still my overall favourite.
Will try to find out more about the sound card issue as highlighted by fredeich. The puzzling thing is that all the other sound effects are working fine. If my landing sound problem is due to a sound card or driver issue, wouldn't the other sounds be similarly affected?
Cheers.

Spent the last few hours uninstalling my Real Flight 4.5, then re-installing the 4.0 before downloading the 4.5 upgrade from the Internet to try again. When this was installed, I found the landing sound to be perfectly normal. I then proceeded to install the Expansion Packs 1-5, and again found the landing sounds to be normal.
Next, I downloaded the free Add-On No 4 (as I wanted to test the Albatross again). To my disappointment, the same loud unnatural landing sound was encountered again. In fact, all the other airplanes in this Add-On have loud landing sounds. I think my problem could be due to some incompatibility of my sound card or driver with the older series of Add-On. I will try downloading the other free Add-On tomorrow but I suspect it will be the same as Add-On No 4. Anyone else who had installed the free Add-On series encountered this?

I have noticed that some of the add on aircraft have funny landing sounds too. Not so bad on my system, but not realistic either. I did notice that when I upgraded from 4 to 4.5, all of the aircraft got the big thud sound when they landed on the runways. I think the physics changes between the runways and the grass might have made some difference? I noticed that my ground handling changed, and that I can ground loop many aircraft without touching a wingtip. (I fly off of ice in the winter, so it is almost realistic in a way!)
I am planning to revert back to 4.0 when I get the time, as I can't use any airport other than evergreen without getting the jitters from frame rates dropping too low. I really like playing with the float flyers, so I want to get them working again. It is a great program, and it you have the absolute newest, fastest computer, it works really well. I don't have that computer, so I need to back it down a bit.
(Running a Q6600, with 4Gb Ram, and a 8500 GT Graphics card on Vista 64 bit...) I think my system would be fine if I had loaded it with XP, but the Vista really contributes to the bloat.
Good Luck, and have fun
