Found a kinda nifty article from the February 1912 issue of THE OUTING MAGAZINE

"The Fun of Model Yachting."

Has a number of photos of period yachts sailing on Spreckles Lake in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park as well as a popular style overview of the hobby. SFMYC gets a mention

Found it using Google's new search archive of magazines. Imagine being able to search the entire run of Popular Mechanics.

Anyone else have things or sources for articles and such from our deep past along this line?

I read the article and found it interesting while I appreciate kits and R/C these guys had to fabricate everything and follow in a canoe to boot. I would also suspect 25$ in 1912 was a healthy sum.

Excellent read - thanks for posting! My wife will have a good laugh when she sees the first page about "childish pastimes".

Kcal...

Using the consumer price index; $25 (1912) = $551.44 (2007)

Using the value of consumer bundle (closely approximates actual buying power IIRC): $1,138.49

(The calculator> http://www.measuringworth.com/uscompare/ (with descriptions and definitions below).)

A troy ounce of gold was fixed at $20.67

It was interesting to see the bit about upsetting the boat. And how it would lead to a loss of rigging and tackle.

nothing about the soaking. Typical

Thanks for the article.

A reminder of a 1930's model yacht video (I know Craig_c knows about it because he commented in the thread):

I needed freeware VLC to view it:

But going for a swim has always been integral to our hobby! It's even better when your best bud is there with a camera to capture the moment  .
