I wanted to see how a direct drive S400 would power a 1/2A sized control liner dragging around insulated lines that are a part of my remote motor control system.
Here are the specs.
S400 6v
gunther prop
8 * 500AR
profile ply body, balsa wing front sheeted.
symmetrical wing 14%
710mm span ( 28.25 inches)
160mm deep (6.25 inches)
area 1336 sq dm (176.5 sq inches)
flying weight 380 gm (13.25 oz)
loading about 10 oz/sq ft
very draggy set up - external elevator control ,battery taped over front of wing, large wheel, relay control external, 10M (30ft) 25thou insulated fishing leader.

Take off in 20 ft on 2 -3inch thick grass
By second lap I had satisfying pull on lines and faster than any of my former 049 models.
Did not time flight.
A crowd of children appeared, sat and watched and both boys and girls fired a lot of questions on how they could build one.
Subjective assessment
This combination certainly OK for trainer style aircraft or scale models of this size.
A geared pusher with tricycle undercarriage would make a good first model - sort of like a C/L Soarstar. Would be good for touch and goes.
I do like the ability to turn motor on and off
I will probably be silly enough to try a loop with it and if it survives I want to fit gearbox and big prop and compare.
Comments appreciated.
Regards
Bob
!! It does loop therefore it does fly upside down and it crashes nicely in my hands but gets back up to do it all again!!

Still flying upside down and upright weeks later. I get controls wrong, I go into ground, off comes motor and prop. Put back on, apply ca on any broken joints, charge battery and go again. "I will get it right!"

Is the remote motor control off/on only?

Using a relay?

Good idea!

Could use the same relay(s) I tested for the auto shut-off circuit.

Thank you all for your replies.
James I do not have facilities here to post a pic and my models are not really photogenic just functional. However if I can organise I will.
jrb yes it is on off only. I could send a pulse up the lines (as I think has been mentioned here before) for proportional control using servo tester and esc however for this exercise I just wanted to remove the need to have a buddy along. It uses a simple 12V relay with driver transistor and the base is switched by the micro switch on the home made control handle( bit of the old 2 by 1).It could use only one insulated wire and reduce drag even further.
I have a few more ideas but will need some of that old spare time. I have sparked some interest among the c/l modelers in my club.We will see if it bears fruit.
Thanks Bobk.
hope some of you who are into c/l can try something similar and go show it off in the local park. We have had a large influx of new modellers and I have had to come out of retirement to help with the workload for the r/c instructors of a sunday at the moment.
regards
Bob
