For the purposes of ECL, are foam wings lighter than built-up balsa construction? (I've never had a foam wing, or I'd just go weigh one and make some comparisons.)

I'm wondering about foam for an ECL trainer. No balsa skin, no econokote.

I would think the ground impact resistance would be good.

Thoughts?

The foam wings I use for combat(over and under hardwood spars at the highpoint, white beadboard) weigh about 0.015 oz. square inch. Covered with polyester film they are very tough and durable and would easily hold up to ECL flying.

Depends on the type of foam being used. White, blue, pink, etc. They come in different densities for each colour, too. If the wing is fat you can hollow it out and make it even lighter, depends how thin you are prepared to cut the skin. How much strength do you need?
