I've become familiar with aircraft specs for R/C e-flight. What are the sizing rules of thumb for C/L electric? I flew C/L ½-A ages ago, and I'm guessing that size to be adequate for speed 400 power. Close?

1/2A control liners have about a two foot wingspan while a 1/2A R/C ship would have three foot or better. A 6V Speed 400 on 8 cells is about equivalent to an .049.

Having tried that one repeatedly.. a s400 is roughly equal to a decent .020 NOT an .049. Generally speaking a s400 has the performance of a Baby Bee... so any model that can be flown by one of those has a chance of working with a s400 *Provided* the flying weight is very similar.. not as easy to do as it sounds.
There seems a trend (recently) to ascribe a far larger power output to s400's than they can deliver.. these are very cheap ($3) motors with a small amount of available power, but with care it can be put to reasonable use, just don't expect miracles.

Hi,
For what its worth,

I have a 44" Supercub that I have flown both with a Norvel 061 and a 6V speed 400, geared 2.3:1. ( 6-3 prop on eng. 8-6 on electric ) while the Norvel puts out more power, the Speed 400 still pulls it with authority. An 020 wouldn't even taxi this plane ( I have some and have tried them on other planes )
I've done some testing, and a Speed 400, 6V will turn an APC 5.7 x 3 @ 16,500 on 7 cells,
( drawing 11.5 amps )
16,500 is better than my old Cox medalions would do.

Good luck with your project
Dave
