Just installed one of your 4800 motors i bought from the local shop, P&A hobbies. I dont have any good ESC laying around so i ran it up to half throttle on the stock 25amp ESC to check for any problems. At about 2-3 clicks of throttle the motor stutters badly but any higher throttle and it runs smoothly. Is this an ESC timing issue? I know the recomendations are to use low timing but i cant adjust timing on this ESC to see if it goes away.

Possibly timing, but that generally timing causes stuttering at half throttle or higher. It just may be the startup sequence of the ESC is not too good since the outrunner is a 6 pole/magnet motor so the magnets are spaced farther apart and the ESC may be having have a hard time sensing the location of the magnets. What ESC is it? If you just add throttle to say 1/4 throttle does it skip the stuttering all together? or does it stutter then run? Also if you go from half throttle down to a few clicks does it keep running smoothly? or does it start to stutter just before it shuts off? What plane are you flying it in? Post a picture!
By the way, P&A Hobbies is the first hobbyshop to sell the Wicked motors :D

I ran it up again. If you ram the throttle from 0 to 1/4 or higher ir stutters for just an instant before it spools up. Once running, if you back the throttle down to just a couple clicks it stays running and doesnt stutter but it makes a strange vibrating noise like its just about to stutter but doesnt. Could it possibly be a magnet thats loose or something? Or does it sound more like the ESC is to blame? I have some other 25amp ESC's ill hook up and see what happens.
The plane that im using it in is the HL Rafale with the EDO fan. The stock speed control is only good for 25amps or so, i have no idea what brand it is. I have a Mystery 40amp ESC on the way to use but wont be here for a couple weeks probably. I just ran it up at half throttle to check for any problems, not going to be flying it or anything till i get a better ESC in it.
P&A is the only hobby shop in this area that has any ducted fan jets or parts in stock that i know of. Most of the old hobby shops dont care anything about this new electric fan stuff, theyd rather not even bother with it i think. Nice to see your expanding. I was rather surprised when i called him to ask if he knew of your motors and he said he had some in stock.

OK i hooked up an Eflite 25amp ESC on the bench real quick and it runs the motor fine. So it was the ESC causing the problem.

Those stock ESCs are the bottom of the barrel ESCs. It sounds like to me it has a poor startup programming and the fact you swapped ESCs and it worked OK seems to verify it as well.

Don I sent you an e-mail about this same problem with my Wicked 3000kv. I switched ESCs it the problem went away. I was using a 25A Dualsky ESC at first. I switched to an Align 35A ESC. The Align is set for Mid Timing. I'm not sure if the Dualsky had programmable timing. Thanks for the tip regarding a loose wire. I did also find a loose servo wire from the Dualsky ESC.
I can't wait to get my plane in the air now that the motors running.

A bad connection/loose wire is 95% of motor issues.
