It's in the fourties this morning and heading for the thirties tonight and I love it. I get so sick of the 98 degrees in the summer with an equal amount of humidity makes for very uncomfortable living. Thing is that if your a born New Englander you will never stop missing the changes in the seasons. Down here it's just green all the time and that gets boring. Don't know how I'd like the winter up North anymore as I've been here for over fourty years.
When I was in the Scouts and Explorers up on Cape Cod we went camping in the winter. Put pine boughs on the snow and a sleeping bag on top of that and slept very well. I loved every minute of it back then.
Anyway it's great to see pictures of all that snow again. To me its beautiful. Pete

Probably isn't a better place to learn how to handle a rig in dangerous conditions. If I had to choose between a driver who got his training in Buffalo vs. one in Phoenix, I'd pick the Buffalo guy in a heartbeat.
The day I got my license (back in 1981) it was in a snow storm. Had icing conditions on the roadway. My Dad had already been teaching me on snow and ice (we lived in the NW corner of NJ). Passed on my first attempt.
Been in two accidents in my life. One was from playing on the ice, the other I was hit by a teeny-bopper blond in a pickup while I was stationary in a parking lot.

I live about 8 miles east from Der Kaptian and we had about a 1/2 inch - If you guys understood what lake effect snow means it is dependent of what direction the wind is blowing across Lake Erie. I have been here where the snow line was so narrow that you could have snow on on side of a four lane highway go through an overpass and on the other side have setting evening sun. I use to live in the southtowns (Orchard Park were the Bills Play) some weeks would get 24" of powder every night. To the north side unless you have a north west wind there is very little snow. Coming from the east coast where you get use to coastal storms that have a defined start almost to the minute the WNY area took some getting use to - The good thing, snow melts and for the most part doesn't shake houses or have flooding waters that carry houses away and the summers never go past 95 degrees with humidity in the 70% going to a high of 88% during a week in August. The two great Lakes offer good sailing and boating and lots of other things. Do I miss stone farm houses and covered bridges yea - but this is has been home for almost 20 years now.
Hope the weather is good for everyone on the group this week,
Rich

 Its Fall here in Utah, two weekends ago we had 2-3" of snow on the ground lots of mountain snow, several ski resorts have opened two weeks before regular Thanksgiving openers. Last Sunday my usual sailing day it was sunny and 58 degrees, no traces of snow left. My friend Tom and I went for our usual 10:00 am to 1:00 pm sail,of course I brought a thermous of coffee, not the usual lemonade or iced tea we have had all season. This coming weekend looks like the very last temps in the low fifties, partially cloudy. Yes then it is the repair ,built, kitbash and modifi season. Actually Rich lives SOUTH of me, which makes me wonder if I want ro crew with a guy who failed Basic Compass 101---.
And it's only about 5 miles---.
Actually it really is south east and a direct line compass heading back to my house is 115 degrees and about 5 miles in direct line would be correct. Except there is the almost due west heading of about 3/4 mile west on your street, then the 1.5 mile south west line (184 degrees) to NFB which is the bulk of the trip heading in a general 110 degree arc, then the 1.2 miles almost due east (88 degrees) off of NFB to my street and the .3 miles almost due south (175 degrees) to my drive way. Of course this was done by dead recon with the help of my old 1998 GPS unit still does a reasonable direction and course heading once it aquires the correct amount of transmitting space vehicles. I leave the fancy Garmin with screen and downloaded map below on the boat and use the 1998 on deck to get true position and subtract the 11 degress varation (all of Lake Ontario fall in that range) to get my compass heading.
Next summer if it doen't rain every week and I can get the wood work back on the topsides - we will take a ride. She is a solid old lady. The are nicer boats, factory fitted better boats - but she meets a period racing rule that Alden and S&S designed boats to. Her sheer line is like the Albergs and very John Alden. That meets my design criteria.
Der Kaptian - get that 1/24 ST hull done!

Say Rl are you leaving the boat in for the winter or is this an earlier picture?

There is a reason for those scrambled lines on deck - As I was taking the pictures - I was just told that 2 boats away from me the mast came down and my boats mast and spreader save 2 boat and mine from some real damage from a falling mast. They used may fore and main Halyards to get the mast down. If you notice there is no boom on at this point as this was very early in this last season. I am making teak parts to go back on the boat. She is getting to the comestic things know but I want to put in a new water system and a holding tank and flush head that has greater then 4 gallons capacity. The final thing I want to do is unstick a bole in the rudder so I can drop it befor she goes in this year to check the bearings and grease up. She still has the bronze winches which look great when polished. I done allot of work already - but I trying to make this old Morgan 30 - bristol.
Happy Modeling,
Rich
PS - I feel sorry for you guys who never get a chance to experiance snow - over night we got about 2 inches - and when I left at 5:30 am it was still coming down. You can't beleive the calming affect snow coming straight down with now wind can give you nor the absolute quite and noise damping effect it has. It really is like the world is at peace with iself.

Rlboats sounds like that could have been a very serious problem with a mast falling across your boat. Guess that's a good excuse for having scrambled lines all right. One thing about a boat is there's always somethng to be done on one. You do have a couple of good projects there so hope it's all done by spring so you can go out and enjoy the sailing. I love sailing. Calm and quiet. That's for me.I not in any hurry anymore. Ha! Pete

That's what I thought too. In Mass my grandfather had a boathouse to keep his 16 foot Garwood in. He built it on pilings pounded down into the lake bed and one year I helped him raise the boat up with a winch he had rigged up and set the boat on big timbers across the boathouse. That worked fine for the boat that winter but the ice moved the whole boat house almost a foot to one side. Everything was still ok although the boathouse had a slight list to it. Ha! Probably still has the list too but the boat is long gone. Pete

Did granddad hold that woody in the slings in the spring to let the wood expand so the boat wouldn't sink. Two years before the purchase of the morgan - we bought a 57 Century Woody - and rented a garage to keep it in. The year 1 and 2 were great down the canal - taking it up to buffalo shooting harbor light houses - and keeping her clean and painting her bottom to cover the pinkish red. Then we bought the sail boat and the woody stayed in the garage except for shows - By the 4th year my wife was ready to sale her because she already took sailing lessons and what to go out on the boat with a head in it. Year 5 QT went to the Clayton action - we got what we paid for her and went home happy. The only way to keep these boats alive is to have a boat house and keep those bottoms in the water or use them more than once or twice a year.
Your right about sail - it may be slower but allot less noise and it has worked for 3000 years.

Rlboats I'm not sure how he put the boat back in the water as I never saw that. The hull was doubleplanked with a canvas layer between the plank layers so from what I remember after we got the boat it just went in the water and that was it. When Pop got too old to use the boat he gave it to my father. We always kept it at Edwards Boat yard in Waquoit Bay on the South side of Cape Cod where it stayed in the water at a mooring all summer and was in Edward's boat shed in the winter. I was just a kid at the time but no doubt there was a lot more involved with keeping the boat in good condition than I knew about. More recently I was looking for some history on the boat and found the family of Capt. Connell of Fall River,Mass who was a Garwood dealer and was able to get a copy of the original bill of sale for the boat to my grandfather. That was exciting to me. Pete

I know what Chuck means about the bluehairs. I get a kick out of cars with no drivers in them. With the highback seats sometimes you can't see the drivers and when you do they turn out to be little old ladies in big cars left to them by the departed husband. They generally are looking through the steering wheel, signaling a right turn while actually turning left or stopping in the middle of the road. Got to watch out every second.
And ya Charlie. 15 is the max tourist speed here now like up there. People pointing and looking at a damned palm tree instead of watching where they're going. Pete

I will take a good old fashioned Blizzard over an ice storm any day. A half inch of ice on everything and it is even dangerous to look out the window.
It is kinda pretty though.

I think your presence is interfering with Vancouver snowfall,
We are getting dumped on in Beaverton, but the cameras seem to
be showing almost sunny in Vancouver. :p

But we have a dusting here... but not the 2-6" that was forecast... yet..
Which only goes to prove..

Really great pictures guys and thanks for all the weather comments. Went to the flea market over the weekend and Saturday was really cold and windy which made it cooler. Temp was 46 and the windchill was 40. Pretty cool for here.
Another index I came up with is the toilet seat index. YUP! Gotta have one. On a scale of 0 to 10 with 0 being the coldest the toilet seat index was 6 on Saturday morning. I do feel sorry for anyone still using an outhouse. Ha!
I appreciate all your comments and pictures and hope you can "keep 'em coming" Pete

Had snow late Saturday night up here. Worst thing are the winds coming out of the Northeast averaging 30mph sustained with gust over 60. Todays high will only be about 20 degrees at best. About 20 degrees cooler than normal for us! Not used to wind chill factor below 0!!!!!!!

Spent my first 60 years in New England. Now in TN where 2" snow closes the state. Tonight is supposed to be an ice storm, 60 degrees by Thursday. I do miss a good nor'easter now and then and some of the snow pictures look pretty nice. Probably my 17 year old American Eskimo misses it more than I do. Couldn't get her to come in after a foot of new snow.

My son still has no power and it may be 3 or 4 days yet. Today it was in the 50's so allot of the ice is gone but the loss of trees is in the thousands as is folks without power.

How are you making out Charlie? Hope you at least have power so you can keep warm.I figure an ice storm is way worse than a hurricane. Pete

17? I guess those Eskies DO live a long time if they're healthy. :)
My first one only made it to 16, but he had a lot of health problems---. :(
The one I have now just turned 10, and I expect him to be around for quite a while---. :D

Kap, About 9 years ago she tore a tendon in a back leg. The vet said it may heal, we can do surgery which probably won't work, or she may limp all her life. We didn't do anything. When we got here our vet said to give her a glucosamine tablet every day. In about two weeks she hardly limped at all. Today when all three dogs and I go for a walk around the barn she runs at top speed all the way. She can't keep up with the "kids" but she sure can do a lot better than I could. Sometimes it's hard for her to get up but once all her parts are working she's as bouncy as ever. I've been taking glucosamine ever since. Hasn't worked that well with me but I guess I'd have to take about 5 pounds to equal the dose she gets every day. :)
Does your guy love the snow like she did?

When the snow is shallow, he sticks his face in it, and when deeper, it's a full roll---. :D

Beautiful dog kapitan but I'm not familiar with the breed. Is it like a husky? My dog Cinder is a Golabracollie. Her mother was Lab and Golden and the father was Lab and Border Collie. Poor girl has never seen snow and would probably love it if she ever got into some.
Nice picture too. Any more "snow dogs" out there? Pete

Kap, I have an almost identical picture of her on top of a 5' high snow bank I plowed from our driveway. Back in CT of course, not here. No idea where it is though.

Pete, "American Eskimo" is a name given to a Spitz not born on the European continent. ;)
Dogs had been bred there for over a thousand years, and the arrogant kennel clubs would not recognize animals born elsewhere. So they were renamed---. :)
Yes, my dog is part of the nordic breed which includes the husky, samoyed, etc. Typical of his kind, he's pretty strong for his size, and VERY hairy---. :D

From the weather forecast your "American Eskimo" is going to get lots of snow. They are forecasting 10cm for Toronto and the main fall will be south of us (Buffalo and West NY)

Gerald
