I'm getting ready to buy the 550. My question is this: I don't want spend $60/$70/$100+ on cyclics if I don't have to. I don't want to buy twice...(well maybe)...but I also won't be doing any hardcore 3D for quite awhile either. What I think I know is...
I will want at least 50ozs of tourqe ?
around .18 @ 4.8v + or - ?
Digital ?
I beleive metal gears would be wise ?
Is there anything out there in the $30-$40 or so price range ? Or am I just dreaming ? Has anyone tried any of the HC/UH/HK digitals yet ? I started looking there and here for name brands...but there are so many...I started to get a headache.
Thanks ahead, Bill

I ran some similar JR servo's on my Swift 16. They worked, and I didn't do 3d at the time.... that being said one finally dumped after I tried to get creative and run a few heli-cam flights. Under the additional load placed on the cyclics when controlling with some extra weight took one down. (it started glitching hardcore which was terrifying in flight because the helicopter would just pitch into a straight dive and then for no reason give me control back)
On my 620SE setup I ended up going with nice JR digi's. Remember, you lose a cyclic servo and you've basically lost the whole ship.

It just dawned on me...I'm looking for standard size servos. I don't know why I was stuck on looking at minis ie. 9650 size. I did however just order a 9650 with my 401. I hope it will be ok for easy flying.

one thing you really want to do (that is if gaui hasn't yet addressed the issue) is get a thrust bearing tail grip setup. i used the trex 600e tail assy and it works great, cheap too.

I don't know how long ago this was an issue. I heard that they had pretty much worked out the bugs/glitches. I will watch out for this issue though.
Thanks for the heads-up, Bill

the more i think about it, i do believe that they now included a thrust bearing tail assy. couldn't hurt to check it out though, as some people who run higher headspeeds (2000+ rpm) were getting tail lock-up issues.

Good luck with the 550....I love the two I have....
If you haven't had a chance..you might check out the 550 forum on helifreak.
pretty big 550 following there and lots of help.
It's good here too but you either have to start a new thread or read thru 5000 posts looking for your info...

Yup! like the Blade 400 thread I frequent....11,000+ post. Try and read through all of that
Curious...what other 500-550 class have you had a chance to compare to??..
.....and , so far, it looks like I may have settled on the JR821s....wuduhyuh think??
Thanks, Bill

I use Spektrum DS821 on one of my Hurris and Futaba 3001s on the other - only putzing about, circuits etc. but both work really well. The other servo that I would consider is the Hyperion Atlas DS20 - I use a DS20GMD on the tail and really like it.

I'm using Hitec 325 HB servos, carbonite gears....on one and cheapy Airtronic servos on the other...
here are the hitecs
http://www.servocity.com/html/hs-325hb_bb_deluxe.html
when running them on 6v you get a decent speed....and I have over 50 or so flights on the 325's with no problems.....had a MAJOR crash and only stripped one gear out of servos.....aslo use the hyperion ds20gmd and it works great and cheap on the price...

I have had no other 500 class helis.....one guy at my field flys the trx500 and although it flys good.....it seems smaller than what I want.
I really like the gaui 550

I use this ones: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=2&Product_Name=HXT_10kg_Servo_(metal_gear)
I don't consider any high end servos any more since I broke anough hitec and futaba. You get what you pay but you don't need to pay more than 10 bucks for a servo of that size. The quality problems are exponentially less than in the 9g size servos. I never broke one of them but I crashed my hurricane only once.
All non tail dedicated servo's of that size tha cost more than 20$ are a waste of money for the cyclic of an Hurricane 550.

Thank you everyone for your input. I ended up using Futaba 3050s because they were already on the heli I found used (barely used) It's got all high-end (or close)componants. If I tell you what all I got and how much I got it for...it'll just make you sick....
Thanks Again, Bill

do tell! we like to hear of other peoples good finds. unless you mean "it'll make you sick" in the other sense as you got overcharged, in which case keep it to yourself.

I run JR/Spektrum DS821s on the cyclic ($30 each) and a 9650 on the tail (its what I had). Works fine. If you have the stock frame, you'll need to get adapters to use the smaller 9650 servo. Ready Heli has them.

I gotta deal and ended up with a 9254 on the tail of the 550. Now!, on the other hand...I'm using HXT 900s ($3.65)for cyclic on my Blade 400 and a GWS HPX ($12) on the tail (stock gyro) WAY better than the didital stockers.
