I am thinking about buying a super danny from hobbyclub.com. Anybody have any first hand knowledge of this very nice looking machine? Flight reports? pics? auw? durability?

I called hobbyclub and was surprised to learn that it is full house and not polyhedral. I thought full house was an option, not the only option;) Although Alberto (I think it was Alberto) did say special order polyhedral wingtips could be ordered for it.

I guess Larry Jolly helped design this glider, right? I was also wondering why it had ailerons, flaps, and also spoilers.

sorry to be so ignorant... so, take it easy on me. There is almost no info on this variant of the danny on the web. Any info would be appreciated.

Randy,

In theory, if you were at a club contest where there were separate "unlimited" and "RES" contests, you could fly in both classes. (Tape the flaps to the ailerons, & enter it as an RES). My "Full-House" Super Danny came out to 55 ounces, all-up. :) The Danny's thin Drela airfoils penetrate well, even with it's super-light wing loading.

Bob McGowan posted these two build links on the RES version.

For the "Super" version, I do recommend some slight modifications to the linkage.

thanks rduder... that is a very nice looking super danny! for a full house aircraft, it seems to have a lot of polyhedral. how well does it turn rudder only- is that a viable option? how much weight did you have to add to balance it out? how does it fly? thanks!:)

It does turn OK with rudder only, but I modified the rudder linkage to maximize the throw.

The factory design locates the pushrod-stab connection point on the stab, inches behind the center of rotation. The stiffness of the horizontal stab linkage was significantly improved by moving the linkage connection in-line with the pivot point. (Same as a Supra) This also allows the stab to be removed without dis-connecting the linkage. New offset stab horn was glued & tied to the original with kevlar thread. Again, a piano-wire Z-bend is thread-wrapped to the carbon push-rod for minimum aft weight.

I used a Hitec HS45 for the spoiler, and built "telescoping" type linkage for it.

I didn't like the stock recommendation for hanging the 72MHz receiver antenna out in the wind, so I stuffed a 2.4GHz Spektrum 921 rx in the wing center panel. Two satellite antennas were added. The plane has been thermaled at the limits of my vision (without binoculars) with zero radio issues.

thanks a lot rich! have you ever seen anyone else flying this one? it seems like you are the only flying this bird.:) now i just have to decide on this one or the pulsar 3.2. i was thinking about buying the super danny and getting another e-fuse to make them interchangeable... but i could do that with the pulsar too! too many choices and not enough money!:D

I also have one, it may be the only one East of the Mississippi River, but don't have a lot of flying time on it. I usually only fly it if the wind is less than 10mph. Just to put my comments into perspective, I am not an expert competition flier and have not flown the top of the line moldies. It launches well and so far, seems strong enough for a moderate zoom. Because of it's light weight it thermals and hangs well. It is easy to fly for a full house ship.
The rudder and elevator control mods shown above look like a good idea. I had trouble getting straight, slop-free rudder and elevator control without binding. There doesn't seem to be anyway to add ballast unless you plan to add a tube from the begining and work the radio installation around it.

thanks john. why do you have that wind restriction? is it because it lacks penetration or you are not comfortable flying in that kind of wind? (dont get me wrong...i dont like flying in the wind that much either-but certain planes make it alot easier than others?) what other planes do you fly?

i am no expert, either. i have flown a few moldies. managed to crash the last one after running out of battery power on the rx. what a dummy i am!

I have built one Genie LTS and recently acquired a used Pike Giant. If the wind gets above 10 mph those planes are better at covering ground. Other planes in the fleet are a Soprano, a modified Sagitta 900, Lil Bird 2 Meter, 4M semi-scale, etc. etc.!

well then, you are a pro then! :) how does the super danny compare to the soprano? how do you like that genie? you got any pics of your birds... i would love to see them.

I will PM you with more info. Regarding Super Danny vs Soprano; they launch and fly similar, but the flaps on the Super Danny make landings easier.

I have a RES Danny and have NO problem in the wind. You can add weight in the spoiler bay(if you have one) The Danny dose great in the wind. Fred
