RCM8930 Pilot-1 "Waco YKS-6" 1/8 Scale ARF

50" wingspan, 37" long, 624 sq. in. wing area, 43 oz. flying weight. There are few things more attractive than a Golden Age biplane and WACO created some of the best. Our Pilot-1 Waco YKS-6 in 1/8 scale captures the overall beauty of this airplane and brings it to you in an easy to assemble ARF. Precision laser cut all wood construction, pre-assembled and pre-covered in genuine Oracover. Much simpler to assemble than many biplanes, the Waco's upper wing attaches to the side on the fuselage and is automatically aligned. Assembly will take 6-8 hours, the illustrated instructions provide clear guidance. Our recommended power system provides plenty of power for quick take-offs and a great climb. The airplane will perform all the standard aerobatic maneuvers but is at its best flying in a scale manner, doing touch-and-go's and shooting landings. Flight times are 10-15 minutes. For 4-channels: Ailerons (2 servos), Elevator, Rudder and Throttle.

Any chance this one will be available in something other than black-n-white? Some color would be nice.

This one is Blue and White. It may seem plain, but in the air it looks really sharp. We are working a 1/4 scale version that will be Orange and Silver.

Jason,
I like the looks of this airplane. Guess I will need to order one. I see that they should be available on Friday. Any chance of seeing an assembly manual posted on-line?
Thanks,
Shawn

Yes we will post the manual online soon. The planes should be here any day now!

Jason,

I was watching the on-line video. I can't see the ailerons servos. Are they located within the wing above the fus?

Thanks,

Shawn

OK, I could not resist any longer. Ordered the kit and am looking forward to it arriving. As I assemble, I will post pics and comments. Who knows, might even add a pilot to it. I did order a second battery so I can get two flights in during a short period of time. One battery can be charging at the field as I fly on the second one. Now, the hard part....waiting for the kit!

The aileron servos are in the bottom wing. We just got our shipment in and we are getting ready to ship out the back orders! We'll have the manual posted online soon as well.

Thanks,

Jason,

I have printed off the manual and have a couple of questions:

1. Where do you get the 1/2" servo arms from. I have looked on-line and can not find them. Do you cut down a straight servo horn?

2. Is the antenna wire routed through the inside of the fuselage or out and along the bottom?

3. Is the prop hub/adapter included? If not, which one did you use?

Thanks,

Shawn

Shawn,
The servo arms are just the ones cut from the HS-55 servos. We used spektrum receives, but you can route your antenna either way. You use the prop adaptor from the Axi radial mount set. Hope that helps.

Jason,

The Waco arrived today. What a wonderful kit! No damage and only two small wrinkles in the covering. I started assembly. When I tried to seperate the ailerons from the lower wing, I could not get them apart. Not wanting to damage anything, I stopped. Have they already glued the hinges in place? I am assuming this, only because the top ones seem to be glued also. There is no step in the manual on gluing the top wing aileron hinges in place. Any ideas on this? As always, thanks!

Since it is the weekend and you probably want to build your airplane, I'll try to answer your question.

The prototype WACO I built had the hinges lightly tacked in place. I had to work the aileron hinges back and forth to get them out. The gaps on the ailerons were not right on mine. So it was obvious to me they were not glued in permanently.

My suggestion is if the gaps and spacing is correct, leave them in place. They may already be glued in place from the factory. You could still add a little thin CA on each hinge just in case.

I'll pull a kit on monday and see if they are glued in properly. If so, I'll change the instruction manual.

I hope that helps :)

Beautiful, just beautiful: but why did they use that stupid carbon rod push rod system instead of EZ connectors?

Good question. I have used the carbon fiber pushrod system in other airplanes and it is a little non-standard here in the US. It does work fine and allows adjustment for variations in servo type and manufacting tolerances.

But your comment is correct. I personally like your system better. It is also easier to do, especially for first time builders. It is a great idea and we will try to incorporate it into the next shipment of planes.

Again, Thanks to all who have "PM'd" me with suggestions on all the new Pilot-1 airplanes. Please continue to PM me with suggestions on building and instruction manual changes for all Pilot-1 airplanes. I welcome your feedback.

Thanks again, :)

Warbird01,

I'm glad you love the WACO! It is one of my favorites as well. Maybe I'm a bit biased, but it really does fly great!

As promised, I have pulled a kit today and all the control surfaces are already glued in place. I personally would add some thin CA to each hinge just to be on the safe side. I will work on changes to the online manual over the next few days.

I also got a PM about the cowling sticking out to far. The plywood attachment ring is also CA'd in place and can be very carefully broken free or use a CA debonder. Then follow the instructions in the manual on installation. The ring needs to be moved forward about 1/4".

I'll try to post some detail photos this week.

Glad you love it! :)

Chris and Shawn,

If the Waco is anything like the 1/8 Scale Champ I just built, then the CA hinges are already glued into the wing and stabs. The instructions said to remove them and fold in half, but mine wouldn't come out. I'm not complaining...it saved a little work for me, right? ;)

I agree.....anything that saves time in construction means more flying time! :)

Well guys,

The WACO is just about complete. A few minor things left to do. Still need to install the reciever. I am building a small tray to hold it. The battery and ESC were back ordered. The good news is the battery is on the way and should be here in the next day or two. The bad news is the ESC is still on back order. The plane went together well with no real problems. The 6 hour time to assembly is about right. I think the guys at HL have a real winner with this model.

Can't wait to get her in the air. I will post the flight information and will try to have some pics.
