3S with 5400 & Alfa 3 blade OR 4800 & Alfa 5 blade?

Just wondering what the differences in performance are between one of the 5400 motors in an Alfa fan with the stock 3-blade fan vs. one of the 4800 motors with the 5-blade fan both using 3S TP Extreme V2 lipos? Looks like both setups pull similar amps/watts. Any insight here?

I think if the watts are similar, you can probably expect the flight performance to be pretty much the same? Don may have flown both setups though and can probably offer much more insight! :D

If you look at the chart below, this is the thrust of the Alfa 3 and 5 bladed fans. The Alfa supplied graphs were exteded to higher rpms and replotted. Looking at it, 44k rpm in the 5 blade is ~725 grams of thrust, and to get ~725 grams of thrust on the 3 blade requires about 57k rpm. The Wicked 5400 gets about 53k rpm so you would be better off on the 5 blade at 300 watts. The real question though is were the Alfa supplied thrust curves this chart was based on accurate inthe first place!

I have flown a 3 blade at 270-280 watt range and based on my buddies EDF on 3S in the 5 blade they are pretty close. Only real difference is the sound, the 5 blade is quieter.

Hello, I just just got my hands on my first Dons wicked 54oo kv for an ALFA A-4 , I forgot to oder a 5 bladed fan from HL and have a couple of 3 bladed fans on hand .After consideration I think this setup will be good for smaller 3s batt.in the 1300 mah range. Im getting 270 watts and its real smooth ,.so Ill try this for a while.I was flying this A-4 with a JS 5 blades but the motor was faulty and could only achieve 60 percent throttle travel( before it failed.)It scooted pretty darn fast though and I suspect I will get the same or better with this Dons 5400 on 3 blades.Of course the 5 blade will go on later.
