Got my Piccolo together with a collective pitch and pico plus board but it
seems a bit unstable. The tail rotor is not bad but the heli wonders quite
a bit and I can't hold it steady in one spot. Of course it's been years
since I flew helicopters so I'm really rusty. Anyone got any perspective
on the situation?

Sticky ball links, or sticky swashplate, or sticky servo links. They ALL
need to be friction free.

Goes for ALL heli's too, not just the Pic type.

Piccolos are like that - much harder to fly than a 'real' model heli.

I wish I'd never bought mine, but I've had some fun with it. See:

Look on it as a good training aid...once you can master one of those things you
are ready for anything!
I had one too, and had some good times with it.

Paul,
check out the ikarus message boards.

There's loads of good information there that will get your Piccolo flying
rock solid.
The thing with the Piccolo is they fly OK out of the box, but need a few
mods to get them flying well.
