Hey guys,
Is there any particular type of paint that works best on epoxy pods?
It is made with West Systems epoxy BTW.

Hey Ozmo,

I don't know if it'll work on epoxy pods, but it'll stick to EVERYTHING else and makes a great primer. I think it's made by Tamiya and it's called Mr. Surfacer. Comes in three thicknesses and sands down fine and feather smooth. You should be able to find it at HobbyTown or any other hobby shop. Don't take my word on it though. It was just a thought I had when I saw your post. I'm sure experts will be able to answer with better alternatives soon. Good luck though!

The stuff that Hossfly mentioned, is made by Gunze. Most of the time when you find it, it will be in shops that specialize in plastic models. The spray stuff comes in 500, 1000, and 2000. The lower the number, the thicker the product. If you use the 500, your probably going to want a coat of primer over it, as it can still be just a tiny bit porous.

It also comes in small jars, the thinner stuff can be airbrushed, you thin it a little bit with lacquer thinner

I've never tried it on an epoxy fuselage, so a little testing would be in order, but I think it would probably work ok. Now you got me curious, I have a fuse, and several rattle cans of the stuff, I'll have to give it a shot :D

Just lightly sand it and apply a light-colored automotive primer. Then paint.

Hi sjgoulet,
Well thats a heck of an offer! I will have to build it first. The Bubble Dancer project is in the end of the collecting materials phase. All I lack is balsa and West Systems epoxy. I hope to start building it after the holidays.

My goal is to have three gliders and a tug ready for next flying season.
I have a Big Bird XL ready to cover and a Bubble Dancer in the parts collection stage. Also two Gentle Ladies in the box and one very old Gentle Lady built. I want to bash one of the GLs into a budget 2 meter RES bird. Change the air foils and carbon up the spars, add spoilers, lengthen the nose a bit, etc. The tug is being covered now.

Our club had the annual planning meeting last week and I will schedule a glider tow and piggy back day at the field. It will be in the end of June I think. more on that later.

I hope to make it to the MVSA club competitions at least a couple of times.
I will get schooled there big time I know but it will be some great training.

GUNZE!!! Thanks Steve. It's been so long since I built a plastic model that I couldn't remember. After posting above, I got to thinking that I might like to paint a fuse I have laying around. I'll have to get some new Mr Stuff though...

arrgh....Painting a Bubble Dancer pod... What's next, covering the wings in SIG coverall and painting it with a two-pack epoxy metalic...

Do a good job on the pod molding dude and the finish will have already be done for you.

Weight is your enemy(on a still afternoon)...Go for target weight, mine came out 34 1/2 oz and it goes well. When I put 4 oz of ballast in it, it feels heavy, it's much smoother to fly but it just doesn't Dance on the Bubbles.....

I hear you on the wieght issue. I will use UNLEADED paint if it makes you feel better..LOL  :) ;)

Actually I have a couple of good reasons to paint this one. I need to make it bright so I can see it for one.

Hey Tony,
I almost jumped into the car to be a spectator for your last TD event of the season. Almost, any how I visit your web site often.

It's going to sound weird, but I once painted an epoxy-fiberglass covered boat with California Paints Troubleshooter Primer. Or at least the name was something like that. IF I'm not mistaken, almost any latex paint would stick well, but this one dries hard too. THe last time I saw it, the paint was still sticking on nicely after several years and some use. THen you could use almost anything over it. Just be sure to wash it off thoroughly, as sometimes epoxy exudes amines that prevent adhesion, or maybe there's mold release still there.

Always wash an epoxy/fibreglass fuze with soap and water first, then acetone if you can find it. Try beauty shops/supply houses for the acetone. If you can't find it, wash with soap and water then 99% rubbing alcohol from your favorite pharmacy.
Should clean it up to allow almost anything, including Krylon to stick!!

Some beauty shop acetone or finger nail polish removers may have conditioning oils in it. Acetone from the paint or building supply places is straight old stuff.

Of course, always read the ingredients. The one my wife bought, and I use(don't tell her) says PURE ACETONE! She got it from Sally Beauty Supply!!!!
