I am considering a project that would call for swing wings on a large R/C airplane.

Give you an example; If I wanted to have swinging wings on an F-111 that was 80 inches long and about 96 inches (wings extended), how EXACTLY would I do that? I don't see how macro servos can have enough range of movement to make 40+inches of wing swing back. Of course, I want to do it on one single switch command as I only have a 6-channel RX and I've gotta keep one channel open for bombay.

My building materials are primarily various degrees of foam.

Pictures and/or diagrams would be especially helpful.

Many years ago I saw an F-14 model with some servo-geared arrangement. He said it was servos from model sailboats. A quick search found these servos as a possible option: http://www.servocity.com/html/servo_power_gearboxes.html

Nice example of small r/c swingwing here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N34_hFw6lYw

I would suggest a mechanical change in CG with a change in wing sweep.

Found a photo and description that may help you here: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_1914877/anchors_2040249/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#2040249

Here's a thread on a B-1B Lancer build (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=534647&page=20)

If you look at post #289 onwards, it shows how the swing wing mechanism was done. It's a smaller model but the method might be of use.

There are also other swing wing models in the forums.

There was a sport scale tractor prop Tomcat in RCM many moons ago that used a couple of servo control boards, external potentiometers fixed to the hinge points, and the replaced motors turning jack screws to actuate the wings. Shouldn't be all that difficult to frankenstein together, but may cost a few servos guts. :D
