View Full Version : Discussion Best 9gm servos for V-tail ruddervators

Hi,

I am modifying a used Graphite (3.1m) glider I bought, and I have decided to change the pull-pull system that was installed for the v tail's ruddervators, to a direct servos in the V-tail system. The V-tail isn't the original from the Graphite (neither is the fuselage), but I am going modify the v-tail so that it is lighter overall (though adding servos there isn't going to help, but I like the idea of a solid control it will add).

SO my question is, what is the best 9gm servo to install in the V-tail. The V-tail is thick enough to fit a 13mm servo BUT that would be silly due to the higher weight penalty. I was thinking of the Hyperion Atlas DS 09AMD

What do you think? Any suggestions of other suitable servos???

Dymond D60?

D60, for sure. Otherwise I would use a Hitec 55.

Hi Glen, I've seen Hitecs micro MG digitals advertised around here. In preference to the humble H55 might be the HS5065MG micro digital, same sort of lowish torque unfortunately; http://www.modelengines.com.au/view/page/27/item/HTHS-5065MG.html
I don't know what these are like to use, But am considering them as a replacement in my PA electroshock3d.

Looking at the hyperion datasheet though, the DS-09 to 13 series do seem superior on paper than the HSMG digital series (wouldn't be hard in some ways) so you have got me interested in them now!
Have any members anything to report on these little servos?

Steve.

Somehow.. I don't think the usual HS are going to cut it in a swift bird like the graphite, even if they have (a) metal cog and a dig circuit.

I'm starting to like the specs of the hyperion units; http://www.airstrike.com.au/Hyperion%20Servos.htm

Are you going to beat me into trying some masterpiece? ;)

I have used Futaba S3154 micro digitals in some of my DLGs on the ailerons.
Excellent servo in my opinion.

Hahahaha, I think so. I have a pair of the Hyperion DS13TCB to go into my Mini Ellipse-E (the one I was flying at the Airshow this year). I have had them sitting in my model room for about a month now waiting to be put into the wings. They will be replacing the HS85BB's I had in there (one of the gears got striped on a wild landing and I decided that it would be more fun to replace with digi's rather than replace the 85's gear set .... although I have since replaced the gear-set BUT got the Hyperions in the meantime).

BTW have you been out to the new "Bundaberg Electrics and Gliders" aero club near woodgate, Steve? Mark Linwood (club president) said someone from Hervey Bay came out who flys gliders, and I could only think that it may have been you. It's a nice field. I am thinking of having a bit of a fly out there. Nice guys too

Thanks guys for all the alternatives. I really like the HS65's (much more over the HS55's {too easy to strip the HS55's gears, and the HS65 has better holding torque})

There are a few suggestions of servos that I didn't even consider, but they look very nice options all the same.

Thanks again

I have some early initial feedback.

There are threads in the handlaunch and high performance forums discussing them. Some discussion considers the differences between these and the cheaper same/similar versions from hobby city.

I now have samples of both and my initial impression is that the mojo is a tighter servo than the hobbycity variety.

The hobbycity version has more slop than the d47 whilst I wouldn't consider the mojo any better than the d47 in this regards. If I had to choose and didn't want the ruggedness of the mojo's metal gears I would still shoot for the d47's or d60's.

These are initial bench impressions and not any longterm use impressions.

cheers Jeff

Dymond D60?Second that, I use it in organic 2.5 Vtail with good result. No slop at all, meaning NO slop, nada. No drift in neutral-position seen so far. They surprised me. Jurgen.

I have used the Dymond 4.7's in a heli and they seem nice, tight and strong, but I easily striped the gears on the rudder servo, so ..... .

I can get hold of some D60 locally BUT at around $49 each, they are expensive, and just not worth the expense with this economic crisis B.S at the moment.

I was out there for a visit a month or two ago, I'll be visiting again also.

Hi again, please tell more.. this sounds interesting, with the new fuse and V tail to wing adaption.
Cheers,
Steve.

http://www.r2hobbies.com/proddetail.php?prod=rcps91116_15 cheap... effecient, no whining due to bad resolution (I use them as aileron servos as well).. I have found my HS 55's to whine because i made the mistake of using em for full v tail... Their service is also second to none, and yes I am very very hard to win over as a repeat customer...
