Recently I put 2 HS-85 MG Servos for flaps in my compulsion, and I noticed that the servo arm seems to wobble side to side, after taking a good look at the servos, the wobble seems to be coming from the servo gear where the control horn attaches to it. Just wondering if anyone else has any problems with them? I know a few other people in my club are having the same problem but not nearly as much play as mine do.

Sure does not seem right to me..I have/had many 85 MG and plastic gears and have never noticed that..I'm sure Hitec would replace them..I just looked at several new ones in my shop cupboard and they are tight..Brian

i have heard of the metal gear hitec servos being sloppy and i also heard that the plastic gears are tight

I've seen this problem too. It looks like the output shaft has a poor (loose) fit to the top case housing, allowing the output shaft to wobble from side to side. I've only seen this on the metal gear versions. It's a real pain on flaps where the flap control horn is so short coupled to the hinge line.

Curtis Youngblood of R/C helo fame did an interesting mod to his servos. By replacing all but the metal output gear with plastic gears his servos were slop-free and still had the toughness where it counted most. Of course I haven't tried that with my '85mg's, never had a problem yet.

One other problem that metal gear servos can suffer from is roundout of the top of the case. You didn't say how old the servos are or how much work they had done. If you have had them for a while, I would look at top of the servo case and see if there is any wear of the output hole.

Terry-
The HS-85's are brand new out of the box, The only strain they had was programing the radio, triming, Still waiting for first flight. I am really thinking about pulling the HS-85's out and put in the HS-81MG, those seem to be just fine. The 85's will work for now just not happy with the amount of slop they have. I wonder if Hitec will put out a ball bearing servo to fix this mess they have?

If you are putting new servos in have you considered using the HS-125 or the HS-5125? The HS-5125 is the digital version of Hitec's wing servo. I just put servos in my new Omega and used the HS-125 for the ailerons and the HS-5125 for the flaps. Still not use to the constant buzzing of the digital servos. I have other digital servos on flaps, but haven't noticed the buzzing as much. I have had two practice sessions on the Omega and like the new servos so far. The flaps and ailerons seem to be tight and the digital servos seem to hold the setting on launch very well. I have talked to several other fliers about the HS-5125 and they thought they lasted well.

I just installed some brand new HS-81 MG's in my Bandit and noticed a bit of side slop as well... not a problem for me on this application, might be for some...
Just FYI!

The HS 85's are for my flaps, really not a big deal just really disappointed in the slop that they have.

Though I'm using 85MG's on the flaps, I did use 81MG's on the ailerons. I found them to be as well as any other types I've used, if not better.
I think what Arnold was talking about was the new 85MG's. For the money, they could be a good bit tighter.
A friend explaind to me this weeked at the field, that what he's been doing is buying the 85BB's and a metal gear set and building his own 85MGBB's. I thought was a bit pricey at about $27 for the 85BB and $18 for a metal gear set.

I thought that the 85MG's were a BB servo, no?

Great, now I'm gonna have to go dig one out of a wing and see! ;)

its not a question of balls it is a questions of slop. They are going to stay in the wing until it breaks. However no HS-85MG servo will go near any other airplane of mine, balls or no balls. It doesn’t take much for me to see what kinds of products are good or not good. If I buy a product I expect to buy a product of a high quality, this servo looks like a 2-year old put it together and didn’t give a flying flip about it. This has me thinking why I should buy another Hitec product again? keep in mind I have had problems with hitec products before, but decided to give them another chance, I think they blew that last chance. I rather give money to a company that respects their products. I am not saying everyone has had problems with hitec, this is just my personal opinion, experience.

Sorry for going OT :(
FWIW, I use a LOT of Hitec gear, and have only had 1 bad servo from them (a HS-55). I've really been satisfied with the HS85's that I have, and know lots of guys that use them with no problems other than the temperature drift.
Oh yeah, if you're interested in a high-quality servo, you might want to spend a little more than $27.00. Those DS368s from JR are really nice. :)

But at $70 a piece I expect at least one BB on the output shaft.
The 368's are bushing servos. If you won't look at HiTec products check out the new JR DS168 digtal wing servo. Looks like a 5125 clone and only $75 .

The 368's have a great history of reliability as do most of the JR servos... a lot better than Hitech. More $... yep, but when a less expensive servo fails in flight the extra $ doesn't seem so bad!
I just had the little plastic/nylon gear that is in the HS-85MG+ servo fail in flight on an Organic 2.5 E. It was my flap servo and I was on final when it went. It just resulted in a hard landing (the train slipped and the flapped reflexed, dropping the plane hard). No damage but...
I've used JR 368's, 341's and 241's in all my large sailplanes and I'm sticking with them. They are with the $.

I may put 3 of the 368's in my new LEXX, I'll look at the JR line.

all 85mg have slop its in the gears.not a nuff to worey about havent had any outher problems with them. if you want less slop change the gears fo plastic but if there on flaps they would be a bit vunrable.
