View Full Version : TC3 Hex Drives - What's the Difference?

I was browsing through some stuff and I've read that TC3 hex drives don't
fit other 1/10 touring cars becaues the bar thingy is different, but they
weren't clear. Do TC3's have the same size Hex (12mm)? what's different?

Yes, they're 12mm, but I think that Losi and AE hex
adapters/drives/hubs/whatever are interchangable. I plan on testing
this theory shortly when I try and put Trinity TC3 hubs on my XXXS.
The only touring car I can think of that has anything other than 12mm
was the Losi Street Weapon, which was 6mm. The XXXS comes with 6mm hex
wheels, but also includes the 12mm hubs.

Presumably the pin that goes through the axle to turn the hex drives. Maybe
it's a different length.

I thought any wheels would fit, just the nut on the end had to be AE nuts
because they are imperial.

Yah.. the bar thingy :)
I think its a different diameter. So the notch in the hex drive needs to be
bigger, and sticking smaller ones in it will produce a large amount of slop.
But i dont know this for a fact... this is just what i've tried to figure
out.

Yeah i remember that from when i wanted to install some Street Weapon foams
on my HPI, and the dood said i'd need an adapter.
I just find it odd that a company like Trinity (or whoever) would
specifically call an item Hex Drives/Hubs for TC3, when it works for just
about every Car out there.

They won't. There is anothe difference in Losi and "normal" wheels.
Losi axles are a small amount larger in diameter, so HPI wheels have
to be drilled out slightly. Not sure about AE axles, so I'll have to
figure that one out.

They will, except the Street Weapon, though metric wheels have to be
drilled out a hair to fit SAE axles on a XXXS (and possibly TCS,
haven't found out for sure yet).

ah.. i see. I've always had Tamiya and HPI cars and their parts seem to be
interchangable, except that Tamiya's Hex Hubs seem a shade smaller, and
their wheels get stuck on my HPI hubs, but when i just swap the hubs and
they don't get stuck anymore...

I tried putting my aluminium hex hubs (from my HPI Pro3) onto my new TC3.
Doesn't fit. TC3 axles are bigger.

Just a minor difference in the molds, most likely. Losi 6mm hubs are
fairly loose in the wheels (they'll fall out if you turn the wheel
over), but the 12mm hubs are tight in HPI wheels. Not enough to make a
difference in either case, though.

More fuel for my suspicion that TC3 hubs will fit a XXXS :) Thanks for
the info. I didn't have a chance to get to the LHS today to check it
out for myself, but hopefully tomorrow will work.

This would mean that HPI wheels wouldn't fit a TC3 either, but a TC3's
wheels would fit an HPI. I wonder what RPM and Pro-Line use as the axel hole
diameter. I just picked up a pair of RPM Chrome Velocity wheels, I've
mounted the tires but i haven't screwed 'em on yet.. really nice wheels.

HPI wheels do fit Losi cars, they're just a bit tight on the axle.
Drilling them out a bit is just to make it easier, not possible, to
swap 'em.

They don't even take a bit of a push to get the threaded part of the
axle through the center of the wheel? I don't mean that they're so
tight you have to hammer 'em on with a 12 pound sledge, just that
they're not a slip fit.

I haven't noticed any tightness from the axle. If anything, the TC3 hex hubs
are a tight fit into any wheel.

Hmm... odd. I'll have to see if I can get ahold of a TC3 and measure
the threads (unless someone has it handy). My hubs are a pretty good
fit, not tight enough that they come off the axle and stick in the
hub, but not loose enough that there's any slop.
