Sorry, but all my conversion tables shows an inch equals 25.4mm

I think our (USA) system is called the imperal sysyem of measurment.
Who ever came up with that name had to have a few many kilos of soy sauce.

The USA inherited there measuring system from Imperial Britain, You remember The sun never sets on it. While the rest of the world has moved on to metric (for better or worst) the US has stayed with there own version of old Imperial Measure.

PS it probably wasn't soy sauce which you would drink by the liter, but good old Gin and tonic by the pint or yard.
