I have just started building a 50% ScanEagle, I have drawn insperation from Le Phans plan (See This Thread) (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=549982&highlight=scaneagle) but with a few major changes in build method..
1. The fuse will be EPP not built up.
2. The the wings are cut from high density white foam add skinned in 1/6th (1.5mm) balsa.
3. One piece wing.
Here is a quick vid and pics of the first fuse's off the cutter .. it is very lite but very strong.. a quick linish finished it off Mark (AKA Pants) is doing the cutting with me on the phone cam.

I like the one piece wing idea. I paid extra for the DXF files from Le Phan for mine. I was hoping to build one up then drop it into plaster of paris to create a mold. The mold would then be used to create a fiberglass fuse.
The wings are the big challenge with this model because of the twist in them. How did/do you keep the twist when building them out of foam?

I cut the twist into the wings and when sheeting them kept them in the beds to maintain the washout..
I asked for the dxf's also but he said no... I was planning on laser cutting... no biggy I just scanned and converted myself... but I like foam better than blasa..
I am hoping to add an Attopilot to it .. as soon as they get released..

Cool project Mick.
I'll be keeping my eye on this one.
I'll spread the link around at work, others will be interested as well. It's looking good.
What are you going to power it with? Camera?
I dare you to do the SkyHook landing. :D It's a lot of fun and a challenge, believe me.

Thanks Kip.. It will be powered with an electric around the 400 size and 1500kv turning an 8" prop, a 2.4ghz camera will be in the nose ..
If it flys well it might even get a Paparazzi auto pilot..... :p
I believe we work for the same company now Kip... welcome to the Big B....
I was lucky enough to man the Boeing Scaneagle stand at the recent RAAF Amberley Airshow.... got a pic somewhere must post it..

Thanks for the welcome. After growing up in Seattle, I'm finally working for Boeing. I've been with Insitu from the very beginning, I'm employee #1. I'm so astonished at how big we have become. I would never have guessed it 14 years ago in that old tractor barn in Hood River. Wow, so much has happened since then.
Do you know David Hobby?
How long have you been with the big B?

I have been with Boeing Australia for 7 years working F111's and 707(our version of the kc-135) in an NDT and Engineer role.
I was on an unmanned project using an IAI platform (think 400kg plus) till the program closed a few months ago, so back to F111 Engineering dept for me... :( Unmanned is where I want to be..
I have helped out the Scaneagle team a few times, minor stuff really.. (Sapphire, public demo's etc)
I was also on the Technical committee for the last two UAV Outback challenges here in QLD as Safety Officer and Chief Scrutineer...
I have never met Dave but have seen reports of his World comps etc in local rc media..
I remember reading about the trans atlantic crossing and thinking what a step fwd at the time...

A High Density EPS for the wings, with carbon spars and balsa skins...
The Fuse is a black EPP it is very rigid for its weight...
