DAVID JOE

Hi People!
I hate poisonous methanol.
So I am considering whether to use
petrol engine vs pulse jet engine for
my RC speed boat.
Any comments or suggestions?
Regards,
David Tajono

IIRC a pulse jet has no throttle its either running or its stopped not
exactly what you need in a boat?? unless you only want pure speed in a
straight line drag style and if Methanol is that poisonous there should be
hundreds of boat, plane, car, modellers dying each year ?? and drag racers
Indy car racers

You are supposed to burn it not drink it!

Hi!
Methanol is absorbed through the skin and
can cause blindness.
Do you want to be blind handling methanol??

Read the MSDS for methanol and gasoline. Both are toxic, nasty chemicals.
If you drink methanol, you may be blinded. If you drink gasoline, you may
die.
Given such a terrible choice, why not try a non-polluting sailboat?

Hi People!
Sailboats are elegant but are not meant to be
very fast, compared to pulse jet speed boat.
I heard that ethanol can be used to fuel pulse jet.
Do you think methanol engine can be converted easily to run on ethanol? I
heard that the glow plug needs to be turned on all the time.
Has anybody tried running the methanol engine on ethanol?
Regards,
David Tajono

Just read all the health warnings on every glue, solvent, varnish, paint etc that you use. You'll end up making nothing.
Methanol is a poison but treated carefully poses few, if any, health hazards.

Try www.zenoah.com for a large marine engine designed for gasoline.

I have been very interested on building a pulsejet for a while now and if
you go to www.pulse-jets.com there is a very good forum there on jets
including pulsejets. I put a thread about a pulsejet powered boat and people
laughed at me, but it has been done the power to weight ratio isn't to good
for a boat. maybe if u had a small turbine it would be better but I think u
would get better performance from a engine. you could try having a hydrofoil
and that would lessen the drag produced by the hull.

The only problem with the pulse jet is it is on or off, go or no go. Hard
to start no throttle and loud as H_ll ie, wear ear protection. As you
state, someone has done this and when I was a very small kid I remember
seeing a small tethered jet boat in Lake Mead some 45 years ago.
