View Full Version : Question E-Flite 160 (airplane size)

Hello:
I've got an E-Flite 160 motor. The original plan was to use it in a 1/4 scale Super Cub. Yes I know it'll be overpowered. It's an old Ikon-N-Wst kit designed for a gas engine and as such when it gets put on floats with all sorts of scale do-dads it'll most likely be in around the 20lb mark.
Since I'm getting an itch to do a Cap/Extra/Yak/Edge; type airplane.

If I decide to go for it and use the 160 in a 3D type airplane what sort of all up weight should I be shooting for? And any suggestions for an airplane? I'm looking at the 1/4 scale stuff around the 80"-90" span.

I know that you like to build but how about the Hyperion YAK 120?

The 3D Hobbyshop Extra is considered a 50cc class plane I don't think that the E-flite 160 is nearly enough motor.

really? it seems like someone told me the power 160 was the same power as the hacker A60 witch has plenty of power for a 50cc.

OK lets ask this other way:
E-Flite list the motor at 2700 watts. at 150 to 200 watts per lb
the 160 should be good for 15ish lbs?
a couple of airplanes that have my interest are
Patty Wagstaff Extra 300 (http://www.greathobbies.com/productinfo/?prod_id=GPMA1305) I like the cost on this one as it won't break the bank.
The one I really like is the.
Hanger-9 Carden Yak (http://www.hangar-9.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=HAN4650)
I'm kinda hoping that the 160 would have enough power for one of them.
I would need to run it on 12S.
Geoff:
I'm kinda hoping that you are under estimating the 160's power; but I sorta think your correct that I would need just a little bit more motor, for the Carden Yak.

I think maybe closer to 35-40cc power but is no match for the Hacker A60 in my opinion.

I used a power160 in a 74" EF yak, had pretty good power on 10s. all up weight was around 13lbs ready to fly. any heavier than that and i dont think you would be happy with the performance, especially if you are wanting "3D" type power.

The 74" Extreme flight Yak is a very nice flying aircraft and very well built too.

I had the 160 in a Hangar 9 27% extra 260 it flew good at 13lb. I also had it in a EF 74" yak
they both flew well on 10s . keep it light under 13lb. with batterys and you will be fine
I have build threads on both of these planes on RC groups
good luck

10S for the EF Yak you say? :) I also like the price. less than 1/2 that of the 100" airplanes. Checking it out.

i would not get the patty wagstaff extra, my uncle had one and didn't like it at all. something like the great planes edge that a posted earlier would be better. or one of the other performance series:

I have a 1.20 size Super Decathlon with a Power 160.

To see it in action do a search for " Decathlon Electric" on RCUvideos.com

AUW is 16 lbs. Flies great, lots of power.

Quick questions.
AUW? prop? & what batt's?

I like the SU-31's colour scheme and the Yak's 2 piece wing.
The Cap looks like the only way into the fuselage is to remove the wing. That's OK for wet fuel kinda a pain for changing batt's though.

Downloading the next manual to read through :)
[(I drive a Honda Civic) And yes I can get my 1/3 scale Sig Spacewalker in it.]

Geoff:
Is this just a smaller version of the one that you've brought to Chilliwack the last couple of years now?
Also I can't seem to be able to find any more info on it than the page that you linked to.
I'm kinda leaning towards the "Extreme Flight" Yak, just printed off it's manual for lunch time reading at work.

The Hyperion YAK 120 is the slightly smaller brother to my YAK 180. The Hyperion YAK 120 and the Extreme Flight 72" YAK are very similar although the Extreme Flight version is a little heavier contruction to accomodate a gas engine. There is almost no information on the Hyperion models and no manuals but Allerc.com does stand behind the Hyperion line. I think that you would be happy with either model.

You can also look at the magic hand yaks at troybuiltmodels.com. Good value and price.

Geoff:
I'm guessing that 10S would work since you are flying the bigger one on 12S
The lack of any manuals is the only reason that I hesitate on the Hyperion Yak. Just a couple of pic's would be nice.
I'll try contacting Hyperion over the next couple of days.
The question that I've got. If anyone knows please feel free to answer.
The wing 1 or 2 piece? Remember that Honda Civic I mentioned
How about the stab (See comment above)
Batt changing options? Nice hatch or does the airplane have to come apart each time.

Rick;

As far as I know the YAK 120 is identical in design to the YAK 180 so it has 2 piece wings and removable stabs. 10s battteries would be perfect. Hyperion really suffers from poor marketing material although the product is top notch in my opinion. Contact Allerc.com for questions. I will PM you the email of Bob.

I e-mail's Bob this morning before going to bed. Bob's reply.
~all three Hyperion YAK-54's (the 85", the 73.5", and the original 54") have identical color schemes.
~The optional R2 and R8 color schemes are only available on the 40 size. There are no other color schemes available in the 120 or 180 size.
~ Construction and design of the 120 and 180 are very much the same, with removable wing panels, stab/elevator panels, and canopy.
Geoff:
I now have a request. Could you please post a couple of pic's of yours showing the top vs bottom. I'm going to go old Chilliwack thread searching for pic's of the bottom.

The top vs bottom visual orientation is what I was most curious about.
OH: and I didn't know that the colour scheme was actually from a full size.

OK I just got off the phone with Bob one is on it's way.
I really like the Hanger-9 Carden Yak, or the Extreme Flight one but after comparing prices. The difference is more than 1/2 the cost of a flight batt with the Hanger-9 or a servo or 2 if talking about the Extreme Flight one.
Here's hoping to see the box next week.

Well it's not on it's way anymore :) since it's already here.
Opened the box and had a good look at it.
This is my 3rd ARF; and I must say that I'm impressed with the airplane. Although the instructions are kinda weak just a dozen or so pictures.
Quickly looking at the hardware it looks usable.
Control horns surprised me. While looking through the different construction manuals, the hardware looks exactly like the photographs in the EF Yak manual. The only difference I can see between the pic's in the EF manual and the Hyperion Yak seems to be the motor box the one for the EF is solid and it would appear that you glue the top on after installing a fuel tank.
Looks like it'll only take a couple of days to put it together once I have the servo's.

You'll see a few similarities with the EF Yak cuz they both come from the same factory. As far as putting it together, this things goes together like a Lego set. Its very well made.
