View Full Version : Build Log Aegea II plan bash!

Jim Frahm

Okay, here's the plan; I'm going to build an Aegea II 2 meter with an Art Hobby fuse and tail boom (JK Thermic). The cores are coming from Compufoil. I've sourced everything except the elev. v-mount. Any idea were I can find one?

Thanks,
Jim

Check Kennedy Composites here (http://www.kennedycomposites.com/blaster2-repl.htm). Barry sells a Blaster II that uses a V mount for the horiz. stab. You could also pick up a nice stab that fits the V mount while your at it.

You can also make a V mount from aluminum sheet. Drela has an alternate set of aluminum V mount plans on the Allegro Lite page.

Don't you mean "plan bash"? :)

Neil.

Oops! You are correct Neil.

I have a Blaster and that v-mount is a little too light-duty for a 2 meter. It needs to handle those "dork" landings.

I heard someone was making carbon v-mounts for the Allegro lite?

Thanks all,

Jim

I believe Bud Elder makes Allegro V-mounts.

Do a 2M Supra instead. The planform is a little bit different (less sweep), but you get less wing twist under high loads.

Mark Drela has sent me a planform file (the airfoils are the same as the 134" Supra.

I contacted Bud and the v-mounts are on the way.

Anker,

I'm also looking into the 2 meter Supra and I'll likely purchase the wings from you. I'm still looking for a fuse pod that will work with your flat center panel.

Thanks all,

Jim

Bud Elder sells carbon Allegro/Aegea v-mounts for $25. It seems like a lot, but they are exactly as per Drela's specs. I believe weight is 1.5 grams.

I ordered two from Bud Elder. The price is more than fair when you consider the work that goes into building the molds to produce the parts.

Question about wing joiners! Would there be a benefit in building square wing joiners with different degrees of bend in them? Just like the molded Supra.

Okay,

I have a pod and boom fuse, the v-mounts are on the way, and the wing cores are being cut. With the help of some local builders, I hope to do a build log including bagging the wing. This will be done in real time so it's going to run a little long.

Jim, Michael Lachowski makes a pod for a 2M (and also for the Supra) that will work with Anker's wing

Anker, where is the planform for the 2 meter Supra?

j

I have attached a pdf file from Mark Drela. I would build it with a flat center panel and 7 degree tips. The exact plaform is in some dat files that I'll post if someone is interested.

Hi Anker

I would be interested in seeing those dat files. Is there any more information available on this Supra derivative? Anything on the allegro yahoo groups?

Kind regards

When I started building this two metre I wasn't trying to make a small Supra but it seems to have turned out that way... instead of the AG-4X series of airfoils I used the original SuperGee handlaunch sections which I tweaked a bit and EDA = 6

The wing has a Drela style carbon capped spar and the AUW is 23.4 ounces on 624 square inches...it flies a lot like a hand launch and is the most exciting two metre I've ever flown.

I used a V-tail for the first few flights and then decided to try the Supra style tail. I usually prefer V-tails but on this glider the standard tail works better for me but I might go back to the V-tail on a longer tail boom.

I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

Here's the progress so far. The cores have arrived, the pod and boom are here as is the elevator v-mount, and the spar material is on order.

Cost so far: Pod and boom from Art Hobby, $80.00. V-mount from Bud Elder, $25.00. Cores from Les Horvath, $95.00. Spar cap material, $37.00.

I will likely build the Supra 2 meter wing at the same time. I'm not sure if I'll use another Art Hobby pod and boom or a Mini AVA pod and boom for the Supra wing.

Anker,

I too am starting to build a Supra-ish 2M and would greatly appreciate some advice. I would like suggestions on spar design and cloth weights, etc. I have built a Super G and would like to work up to building a 3M in the future. I bet there is enough interest for a new thread on this...

thanks

Steve,

It depends on whether you plan to build it with a capped spar or as a stressed skin wing. I just finished cutting the cores for a stressed skin 2M Supra. I will use 3K x 1K 12.5 TPI carbon cloth. I'll put a diamond-shaped doubler on the top of the center spar extending to the joiner and just have one layer on the bottoms. From just ahead of the control surfaces I'll use 1.7 oz Kevlar on the bias. I do not plan to use reinforcement doublers on the ailerons and flaps. I'll be using a 0.375" ID "tube spar" in the center section. We will see what weight this comes out as.

I plan to use one of Troy Lawicki's fuses for the prototype.

For the spar and skin layup, just go with the Aegea plans on the Charles River site.

thanks for the info guys, I'm planning on a spar of some sort and a 2 or 3 piece wing but all this is new territory. I am aiming towards a full petal competition plane in the 35 oz range. Also looking for a fuse and any help along the way...

I believe Troy Lawicki is your best source for a suitable fuse. Go with a 3 piece wing if you want a super strong one.

"For the spar" I used a Drela carbon capped spar on my two metre and to save weight I attached the spar caps to the balsa sheer webbing with 3M-77 spray instead of epoxy...I sprayed three coats of 77 on each surface and very carefully stuck them together against a straight edge, then wrapped them with 'glass in the usual manner.

The glider has taken every winch I've thrown at it and I''m going to use 77 on all my spars from here on in.

I'm not an expert on just about anything, :) , but I think we should probably take a moment to mention that this works with the bias wrapped spars, but probably would not be advisable for a Kevlar tow wrapped spar (BD, Allegro, etc.). Dr. Drela said on those spars that the bond between the spar caps and the spar core is critical.

"bias wrapped spars"

Yup, the bias wrap makes it possible, it is a real weight and time saver.

It looked to me that Catch-Air was going to do a foam wing with bias wrapped spar in his build...

I'm sure he is doing a bias wrapped spar, as I think just about everyone should given the oppertunity.

But sometimes I worry that folks might read stuff on these forums (aka a lurker) and incorrectly take something out of context. I worry a guy building a Bubble Dancer or plans spec Genie might read that and think it is a good way to go for their build. So I thought I'd mention that point just in case.

I am a such mentioned "Lurker" and will be working on a composite BD, thanks for the clarification. :D

If you are building a bagged wing BD, I suggest you use bias wrapped glass rather than kevlar to wrap the spar. Since with a bagged wing BD, you have to do the spar separate and then cut the cores to put it in, you might as well wrap it with bias fiberglass cloth. Cheap and effective and makes the bond between the spar caps and the core less critical.

Hello guys,

I`m new here. I was looking to building threads of aegea & came across this one. I decided to build a plane based on the plan of Supra 2M. It came out a plane similar to supra. I called it "RUDOLF"". It`s being built in Slovenia. Have a look at the thread on one of our local forums. It`s in slovenian, but there is a lot of pictures of building.
Here is the link: http://forum.modelarji.com/viewtopic.php?t=33275&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

BTW, tommorow is mayden flight.

@Catch-Air
Thanks for good wishes. The gods must be listening to you :D

Today it was the day to unleash this little beast. It was a calm winter day over here. Temperature just over 4 degres celsius. Almost dead air. I had a few troubles with CG, a bit to aft, but after 1.st flight I solved that and went up again. The plane flies awesome. It is indicating everything. If someone farts on the ground, you could feel it in the air. Also it reacts to camber changes as a fairytale. I just cant say enough good things about it.
The weirdest part is, when you push it down, it hardly makes any noise. I think the RDS have something to do with that.

The wing platform is almost identical to Mark Drela`s Supra 2M, also the airfoil selection (AG40-43d). The model was built for our national F5J class, where we have a limit of 75watts on the prop & a minimum of 600 grams weight. Everithing else is open.

I attached the graph of the last flight today with logger. It has a averagesinking speed of 0.4m/s (almost dead air), witch is awesome for a model this size, and even more awesome for a model first time out and being trimed.
I recomend it to everyone looking for a thermal ship this size.

@I_Can`t_Fly
Thanks. The servo mounts were milled out of plywood, the weight of all four is 3grams. In fact, they couldn`t be much more simple than that. And the simplicity was the red line of the project.

Sorry, the build is not going to happen; I'm just too busy working on other projects and I think I have a buyer for the parts and pieces I've collected so far.

Thanks for your interest,
Jim
