Looking for idea's for my 4th year of an aerospace class at my school. We are supposed to build an airplane kit of our choice, document the build, and give a report to a committee of teachers.
I really want to build an allegro, and this class would be the way to do it.
I saw this:
http://www.charlesriverrc.org/articles/allegro-lite-construction/AllegroLite_Introduction/
Supposedly at one point there were full kits offered by a guy named Pat Sloan.
Anyone know if these kits are still available, or any other full kits out there?
I know about the short kit from mountain models, but I am looking for all the little bits and pieces that I would need.

jm.. i'm pretty sure there's not a kit anymore...
i built a bubble dancer (almost finished) last winter...
the allegro is a mini bubble dancer.. anyway, you only have to order from a few places to get everything you need...
if your interested in going this route you'll need
1) the short kit
2) wood from your shop of choice
3) the pod and vmount from bud elder
4) all the carbon you need from cst
5) the boom from polecataero.com
it seems daunting to order from everywhere.. but it's really not that bad.

could you give me an estimate total cost minus radio?

well.. the bubbledancer cost $300 for raw parts..
you'll use less wood and less carbon.. you'll save money if you mold your own pod and vmout.. but in my opinion it was worth it to just buy it.
i think the boom is like 10 bucks cheaper too..
my guess is you could prob. get everything you need in the $200 range.. give or take.

Do I use a DLG boom from Polecat and chop 5" off?
rob1978
Sep 30, 2008, 04:29 PM
i think that would work.. you need to find out what the taper is and if it matches dreala's specs.. but more impotantly.. you need to make sure the diameter will match bud elders pod if you are buying one from him.

Polecat says their DLG boom is
"A longer version of the "Allegro" tailboom. Layup is pre-preg carbon and bias glass."
It is 32" long, and 16g.
The allegro boom is 27" long and 14G.
I'm pretty sure they are a match.

Thanks.
Bud just emailed be back confirming that Polecat is the only place with booms in stock right now.
Well, now I just have to get some money!
Oh, yeah! Is there a full list of all the different sizes of balsa stock I will need?

go to the charles river website and you will find everything you need.

I don't want to have to count through everything on the plans. Things probably repeat twice or three times.

jm.. you obviously are not doing your homework... if you scroll down the allegro page on the charles river site you will find material lists. come on now.. if you were really interested in building this you should have found this already... ;)
ok.. no more help with the pre-work.. everything is posted either on the charles river site or here on the forums... enough talk.. let's see some building.

Alright, you caught me. :o
My only weakness is that i'm VERY lazy. Unless I'm motivated...
I'm pretty sure it's called ADD.

I built mine for about $100-$120 or so, including covering. But, I built my own pod (lost foam, it is easy) and V mount (aluminum).
BTW, the Allegro Lite is a great flyer. Flew mine last evening.

For the Allegro, I think the Charles River site (or the Allegro Lite Yahoo Group) has a word doc with the parts listing. AKA, this many sheets of x wood, type of pushrods, etc.

Nope you called it correctly in the first sentence.
Your best bet is to get a Chrysalis kit, and build it. Simple, cheap, and about as easy a kit as you will find. (it includes all the wood).

Don't know how you can dx this over the internet. Telepathy?
Maybe he's right.
Agree that Chrysalis might be more likely to get done in reasonable time, unless builder is obsessed.

Here is the link to the yahoo group if you have lots of time to read it all.

I will agree this plane takes a long time to build. (I build Bubble Dancer.)

unless builder is obsessed.
That is as big an understatement as there ever was.
The ONLY reason I want to built an Allegro Lite is because it will prepare me for making Aegea's and Supra's. I don't really like woodies.

Building an Allegro Lite is nothing like building an Aegea or Supra. If you want to prepare to build one of those I would suggest trying a bagged model instead of a built up.

I think you should make an Aegea then... The fuses are all the same, and if you are going to learn how to bag a wing (easier than building a wood wing for me at least), then I would just go with that.

I know how to bag a wing.
What I mean is by the spar construction.

I would not go quite that far. The Aegea 2m fuse and the Allegro Lite fuse are basically the same (except one has bagged tails the other wood tails)... So that is similar right there.
The spar on the original design Aegea had a balsa core, so that build method is quite similar to the Allegro spar build method (except sans the ribs).

All the more reason to build the Aegea/Supra. Building the spar is not that difficult and you will have a better performing plane. Did you know that there is a 2 meter Aegea?

Yeah, But I would rather make a coposite plane with airerons. I willbe building an Aegea after I make a CNC hotwire cutter.

Have you thought about a wind dancer kit from Polecat?

jm,
sounds like you got an illness that i call... wanna-do-alot-but-got-no-money-or-time
i've seen you posting all over these forums with all talk of a hundred different projects (cnc, allegro, dlgs, supras, booms, etc)... yet i've seen no action... enough talk.. lets see some build threads!!!! =)

I have. I actually started a whole thread about it.
I have decided to go with the Allegro b/c I have found someone with a full kit that is wanting to sell it, but we haven't agreed upon a price yet.
I like the Allegro more, and I won't have to fill the hole in the fuse.
