FAI records?

Is anyone working on or has worked on an FAI record attempt? I'm interesting in hearing about the process. An AMA record attempt experience would be good too. I've read the Joe Wurts article (http://xcsoaring.com/techPicts/WurtsXCrecord.pdf) several times, but I think I'm looking for more behind the scenes info to figure out how hard it is.
