Hi everyone,

Here are two picture to show the heli:
http://avia.russian.ee/vertigo/foto/fw-61.jpg http://avia.russian.ee/vertigo/foto/fw-61-s.gif
The FW-61, sometimes named the FA-61 too. (if the pics do not load: Click "refresh" a few times. They are on rather slow russian server.

Those on Usenet can see the pics on the links further down.

The FW-61 is a real helicopter although it looks like an autogyro. The "propeller" is only a cooling fan.

Have anyone seen a RC-model of this helicopter?
How would the rotor heads have to be built?
How to control yaw?

I am not in the proces of planing one of these, but i find it quite interesting. Arguably it is the first succesful helicopter and a model ought to be made of it, i think.

Here are a couple of links for the curious:

Happy landings

BasilBadger,

I did a search and this is the only post ever made on this model. You see, I am scratchbuilding one, as an autogyro! :p And yes, there is a plan and if you want, I can give it to you.

Eric

Hey, I got a friend from Denmark too. ;)

Here is a pic of the plan and some photos of the real thing. This plan is not totally scale though since the designer made it an autogyro. I don't care though, I actually think its cool.

Hi Eric,

Thank you for the pictures and plans.

I am still not ready to start planning building the FW-61 as a helicopter, but one day i hope to attack that project.
Those rotor heads are still an unknown. Perhaps i should go visit some of the museums i Germany where they have the FW-61s. I have tried contacting them by email but have gotten no answers.
A good look at the mechanics would probably answer many of the questions.

I would very much like good copies of the plans!
Perhaps you would like the pictures i have collected from the net?

Building it as an autogyro makes sense, since it does away with most of the unknowns surrounding this fascinating aircraft. I think i will give it a go too.

Let us keep in contact.

I wish you the best of luck and many happy landings,
Henrik

Well Henrik, I sent you an email through RCGroups so I don't know if you will get it or not... I have never done it through this site, but I assume it will work. In case you don't get it just put a post here and I'll figure something out.

I bet they don't know each other.

I doubt it also. Its highly unlikely and I didn't expect him to know him, I was just commenting on it since I knew a foreign exchange student from Denmark and leaned a bit about their language and culture.

That looks pretty cool. Have ya flown it yet? (Sorry, didn't check
the date on the last post in that thread)

You do realize that video of the first flight is required for the rest
of us to see, right?

Hehe, yeah I will have one but I can't be sure it will be the first flight. ;) (I'm not so sure it will fly :p ) And no I haven't flown it yet the date is TODAY on the last post. :D All thats left is to connect the servos with the rudder and elevator and its ready to go!

Yeah, but if you destroy it on the 1st flight, we'll never get to see
it airborne. :)

Well, ya see.... I tried to fly it this morning and it didn't fly. I think I know why and if want to know more its all in the thread above. Also, any videos/pics I get will be posted in that thread also. :D Cheers!

BTW, I did have the camera rolling for the flight this morning, its just that it didn't go. ;)
