View Full Version : Gyro tape - again

The thread somewhere down the line inspired me to post this one:
It's not about Raptors but gyro tape in general. Obviously, different
thickness absorbs different (vibration) frequencies. Hence a small nitro
heli that usually produces relatively high frequencies (provided it's proper
build) might be better of with thinner/harder tape.
BTAH, a big gasser defaults to lower (and stronger ) frequencies and might
need therefore a thicker and softer tape? (All in order to prevent a
quality gyro to develop it's own life...)
Anyone out there who can shed some light on the affair? (I really had enough
of this Dennis F*&^ shit....)

I have a Fury .60 that was outfitted with a 401. The Futaba tape worked
fine except it soon becomes two pieces of single sided tape :)

I then went to the 3M tape that I really like. It was fairly dense and not
too spongy, much harder than the Futaba tape. It worked great.

At one point I ran out of the tape so I stuck the gyro on with straight
double sided tape. When I started the heli and took off it would slowly
drift right. I lived with this for a bit, not realizing it was the tape, I
would just init the gyro with 3 clicks left trim and it flew fine.

Then I bought another roll of the 3M tape and swapped it out. My drift was
gone.

Like the stewardess said in the movie "Executive decision" when Kurt Russell
flew the plane and was nervously trying to find what he missed, she said
"Who cares, just fly the plane"!

Many times I found people are too bothered by small or even trivial things
and loss the pleasure of flying, many things I don't see too much difference
(like the tape thing, I have used many different tapes that I have around me
including the Futaba Tape, I didn't feel any difference) unless you have
nothing else more important to do or you are a professional flier like
Curtis. For rest of us, hobbyists, "Who cares, just fly the plane!"

Hm,.. you might be right for YOUR heli. For other helis - like my gasser -
this tape question is a big one because it wont just do with 'any'.
Sure, I could still fly the thing somehow by ignoring this little fact. But
since I fly for fun, I'd miss exactly that with a tail that jerks allover
the place or an battery that is empty after 10 minutes because the digi tail
servo likes to try a life as vibrator....
