I am about to fly a OS35 42inch funfly with profile and stick fuselage that I bought second hand. The ailerons are 4 ins deep. What sort of throws should I start out with?
Thanks

Dunc,
It depends on how much you've flown, especially fun flys. If this is your first one, I'd put about 20 degrees up and down on the ailerons and elevator, with 30 degrees on rudder. You also, if you radio has the capability, set up dual rates and dial in some exponential to soften the throws around neutral.
If you're experienced, do like I do, and put 45 degrees or more of throw on all surfaces, then dialing in some expo (typically between 30-60% expo, on Futaba and Hitec it should be a negative value, or a positive value on JR)
On test flights even, I'll have that much throw, but note, I have a lot of experience flying these types of planes.
Remember, fun flys fly slow, very well, so if it starts getting ahead of you, throttle back, and just putt around the sky.
If anything, seek help on flying this the first time if you're not comfortable.

Many thanks Paul
I really should have said in my question what my experience was. (I have flown quite a lot, over 15 years, mainly IC 4 stroke aerobatic stuff and more recently, the foamies ie PicoJet and TwinJet. My most recent plane is the Magnum which has been clocked at over 200 mph!!!!) This is my first fun fly thought.
Thanks again, your answer has been most useful.
best wishes

Paul -
Flew it this week while on holidays. It went like a bat out of hell! Scared the life out of me, until I got it trimmed. Wasn't long before I was switching the rates off and giving it the full throws. Awesome!!
Thanks for your advice. Some brilliant slow landings.

Glad to hear things went well. Fun flys when not trimmed can be a handful, but once trimmed they are great flyers. I remember the first flight of my Morris Pen Knife, that was twitchy.

"Fun flys when not trimmed can be a handful" - never have you "spoken" a more true sentence!! But when trimmed, fantastic. While the wingspan was about 42in, the OS 35 FP was never more than quarter to third throttle. Glad it was reliable though!!
Best wishes
