View Full Version : Tyre Storage
G'Day All,
I was wondering what would be the best way to store Tyres for my rc cars when
they are not likely to be used for a while (2+ years...)
Is it best to leave 'em in the bag they came in, or put 'em in an air tight
container, and add some of those "sillica gel" satchets?
The aim of the exercise is to keep them from cracking, or going brittle, or
even hard.
Cheers,
Ben.

Would they really go bad in two years? I get the feeling most the
tires at the LHS have been hanging on the shelves for at least that
long.
I read somewhere that a Pringles Potato chip canister works great
(once cleaned out of course) because it's easily sealed and keeps out
damaging sunlight. Adding the sillica packets would probably be a
good idea.

It's likely a lost cause trying to store them that long, but if you do
try, DO NOT put the dissicant packs in there with them. They'll dry
out, get hard, and crack all to hell. Don't let them get hot, either.
Maybe an airtight plastic container in the fridge?
I had some 10+ year old tires on my JRX2 that were still perfectly
servicable last month when I got the car out of the attic. However, 10
years ago tires were much harder than they are now. Don't know how the
new compounds would handle age.

Not at my LHS. They just got a new batch from HPI to replace the
completely gutted touring tire wall. That wall was packed full 2 weeks
ago, too.

Again, don't do that. Tires need humidity to keep pliable. The
humidity here is over 75% nearly every day and I had tires last 10
years. Of course the ones on my XXX are nearly dead now, but that has
nothing to do with the age ;)

Keep them in the original package...Do you know what silica gel or crystals
do?? They absorb moisture...dry things out..DO NOT use them...you will dry
out the tires in no time..I use 1 pound silica packets in my gun cabinet to
stop moisture from rusting them....

A bit off topic, but I've heard from some reliable people that silica
packs can, under the right conditions, actually increase corrosion in
stainless and certain tool steels. I've never seen any concrete proof
that it happens, but I think I'll use one of those electro water go
away gizmos if I ever get around to buying a gun safe. Need to do that
soon, really, since an AK-47 and the likes aren't particularly good
things to have sitting around with a 3 year old wandering the house ;)

I just use Breakfree CLP. Great stuff.

Same reason my SKS is locked up!! never had a problem with corrosion. The
silica works great...BUT...you have to take it out every few months and bake
it in the oven at 200 degrees to dry it out...if you do not.. it will hold
the moisture and then begin to corrode the metals...

Break free is good stuff!! I have the economy bottle!! LOL but if you are
storing long term, it will degrade...you need a dehumidifiyer or silica
packs...

My SKS is sitting right next to the AK, behind me here in my office
that's locked when I'm not in it. Not a perfect arrangement, but it
works for at least a few more months.
Around here silica is a lost cause with all the humidity. Dunno much
about the electro gizmos, but I haven't heard bad things at least.

You get left with a rather damp bag of silica. which will dry out
itself [1] when the temperature goes up...
[1] Condensing on anything in the cabinet...
