View Full Version : Best place to mount a GY-401 on a Raptor 60 & tape?
R5skiracer
Feb 12, 2003, 08:52 PM
I just purchased a Raptor 60 v2 and a GY-401 gyro. The servo is mounted on
the boom but I don't know where they had the gyro mounted. There is a nice
area behind the main shaft and above the boom mount. Is this a good area?
This is my first GY-401 and Raptor 60 so I thought I would tap the group for
advice.
Also, I don't have any Futaba gyro mounting tape (neither does any local
hobby shop). Will the CSM mounting tape work alright for this gyro?
Thanks for the help,
David

I really like 3M Heavy Duty double sided foam tape. It sticks well,
isolates from vibration, and doesn't split in half like the futaba tape.

I have my GY-401 mounted in that area and it works for me.
Any thick double sided tape will work. But you may want to make sure it
doesn't fall off when the tape let's go so I also have a rubber band going
over the gyro which should reduce this risk.

That is the place to install gyro.
Use a heavy duty double sided tape is better, the Futaba one is easy to tear
apart which had happened to me once and heli tail went out of control caused
a boom strike.

It's as good as most places and better than some:-) When it's out of the
radio tray at the front of the machine, it's out of the "danger zone" when
the heli hits (and they do), so it's a good place.

It's a little too soft for the GY range, but what works spectacularly is if
you cut a piece of brass sheet 1/8th inch think and just large enough for
the gyro to sit on. Then use normal double sided tape on the top AND the
bottom of the brass sheet and a layer of double sided on the gyro itself.
This reduces the vibes that would normally get to the gyro to more than
acceptable limits and allows the gain to be cranked up higher than normal
for a better than normal lock.
It takes less time to do than it does to write too:-)

What about it Beav? Do you admit to posting what you said? Did you post
that I said it is destined for military (unmanned) use? Did I say that
in my post? Will you please answer that?

I am. I'm putting out the word that Beavis is a liar, and I'm going to
hound him like he has hounded me for no reason over the years but for
his enjoyment. What's good for the goose is good for the Beav.

I fly two raptor 60's, both gyro's are in front, set it on the servotray
just before the pitch.
In the past i flow the GY401 set up after the mainshaft.
I find personely with the gyro in front, its has better respons.
Curtis Youngblood set his gyro's also in front, see his movies.

Chris, do you have any idea why it has a better response up front?
