View Full Version : Poll New Model ??
Rob12
Sep 16, 2008, 12:57 PM
I would like to build another new model from scratch, preferably a type of boat, also thinking about an airboat, or hovercraft maybe.
A scale model of a real boat or ship is also playing on my mind.
This model will be built with the view of producing it as a kit, which brings about the question :
What type of model would you like to have or see being made next ?
A detailed build thread will be started soon as, for all to see and help with the build to get opinions and views and follow the project from start to finish.
The votes here will be the deciding factor on what model will be made.
Patrol boat ?
Speed boat ?
Hydro ?
Monohull ?
Cat ?
Yacht ?
Hovercraft ?
Airboat ?
the list is endless
Let's hear some votes !!!!

Wooden 1:10 stock Crackerbox boat to compete with the Vac-u-Cracker and Danvo boats. See Crackerbox thread in the FE forum if interested.

Hi Hog,
Just started to read your build on the Crackerbox....
What is the main reason for a wooden kit in your opinion and why would you choose it ?
Is it purely the weight aspect ? or the would you also prefer to simply build with wood rather than plastics that are used so much these days? Or would you prefer glass fiber rather than the ABS / styrene types.....?

Anyone else vote for Crackerbox ? :)

How about a modern racing yacht... like a 1:10 Mini Transat. Great fun and mad to sail fullsize but no one makes a kit or plan to build a model.

If we go with the yacht model........ what hull /deck material gets the most votes from you guys..... ?
balsa, ply , plastic ( vac-form ) or glass fiber ?
or maybe a mix of 2 or more materials ?

An RG-65, or similar sailboat would be cool. Hmm, the cracker would also be very interesting, especially if it included some kind of Plastic detailed scale engine. Ron

I like the Vacu-boat and Danvo hatch cover made to give the impression of the engine top, but your idea of having a more detailed scale plastic engine is a good one. I like it
seen alot of lovely detailed engines in model cars, but never seen any in a boat so far...
good stuff

Funny this should come up , I was just looking at a magazine with
pictures of Volvo Ocean Race sailboats - I think design wise they
would lend themselves well to RC - big mains and smallish jibs that
could be set on jib booms like most RC sailboats , I like those wide
flat hulls and having TWO smaller rudders off a single servo would
make it unlike anything out there. Their keel bulbs on a long thin
appendage is what you see on most modern RC hulls . As for the
rig , depending on hull length, a smaller boat ( under 1 meter ?)
I would like to see a "fat head" main on a un-stayed spar ( like
a Laser RC) or on a bigger hull just top off the spar with a huge
masthead crane ( and std. rigging) and let that main carry all
the sail area that will fit. and graphics, and logos and crazy hull
colors. Make it huge , 50" LOA , one maker for hulls, foils, spars, sails.
Oh , and we will all need a 18" long rigid/inflatable tender with twin
electric outboards and matching graphics.

For me I think a plastic/ABS or glassfibre hull and deck would be best.
I would have a couple to try various configurations of fin, rudder or rudders etc.
Any of the modern sports type boats would be good VO60 single rudder, VO70 twin, Open 60 very wide twin rudder, Mini Transat wide twin rudder and all have different configurations of foils.
I would love to see something like this (http://www.stockmaritime.com/modellboote/open60/angebote.php) in affordable kit form.

Yep, pretty sweet, however, for that class boat and cost, I'll stay with my GRP Odom. Could sure hang with a nice glassed hull/deck RG-65 size boat to replace the Victoria though. Good luck with what ever you build. Will be great to watch/and or build. Ron

Well the build has been decided at last !!
Most votes from you guys were for a yacht, sailboat type model, so that is what it shall be.
The model will be of a Mini Transat.
First step now is to find enough drawings / diagrams of the full size craft, and get as much info as possible to help me to create a set of plans to build from.
If any of you guys happen to come across any links for plans / photos or drawings, mainly bulkhead profile drawings ! then please send them on here !!
A new thread will be started on the Sailboat forum !

What type of model would you like to have or see being made next?
The Mini Transat looks like an interesting model with it's "whopper" sail up front. Here is another idea. Make the keel detachable so that you can change your sailboat from water sailing into land sailing and into ice sailing. You can sell a separate kit for each conversion and make more money. Keep in mind that 90% of your budget will go into marketing and 10% will go into production. Also the 80/20% rule applies. That is that you go after the richest 20% of your customers, and forget about the lower 80%.
And I apologize for posting after the build has been decided, but here is my list:
1 Schwimmwagen
2 Renault V.A.B
3 Dukw
4 off-road vehicle with screw type drive such as

Change of plan everyone :D
The Mini Transat build has been put on hold, and the 2 new leaders are ...
A V060 and V070.
surfing through photos and websites, both these yachts are just stunning and I will build one or the other.
Now working out a few sizes to decide on a scale.
I'm thinking to keep the model under a metre in length, which will make handling / transporting easier.
The V070 at a scale of 1:20 would have a hull length of 1075mm , 1:22 scale = 977mm, and at 1:25 scale = 860mm.
1:25 scale seems to be a good size, what do you guys think ?

Hi Rob
My vote would go for a VO60.
The VO60 & 70 are very similar deck layouts and the sail plan is not that much different, the only problem with a VO70 is the twin rudders and canting keel plus leeboards, I'm sure this will make the model more complex and if it is a scale yacht people will ask where the folis are.
If you develpoe a VO60 there is still the possibility to play with the hull configuration for twins etc.
As to size, they all sound great to me although some scale fittings are available in 1:20 and 1:24.
What ever you decide to do I'll have at least 2 please :) :)

You already made up your mind, but what about something small. Anything small enough for a small pool.

Here is what I would like to see. I like how the RC Laser sailboats on my local pond can be easily collapsed and seven of them transported on one cart. It only takes five minutes to put one on the water or to put it back in the cart. If you could design:
1) Easy and reliable way to collapse the sailboat for storage/transportation
2) A storage box for the boat
3) A cart for multiple models to be transported/stored at the same time
4) Final cost of the boat including all the extras you have to buy such as winch servo and etc.
5) 2-3 different sails - one for little wind, one medium, and one storm.
6) The hull should withstand collisions with underwater stones
Finally, my local club had more than a thousand people stop by and ask about the rc sailboat or try sailing one. The club advertised in the paper and online. After two years, only one new person showed up, but he never finished his sailboat. All other interested individuals and families were put off by the $500 price tag of a boat.
I'll remain very curious to see what others say about your project and the model you end up designing.
All the best.

Hi Guys,
It is now time to start the build, which will be a VO60 at 1:24 scale.
After alot of thought and searching of plans and drawings and photos, and all of you on here so far with you're ideas and opinions thank you very much! with extra thanks to VO70 and HoaRC !!
I finally have together a set of bulkhead profile plans at the scale of 1:24.
These were worked in CorelDraw software, and after alot of wasted printer paper and head scratching we now have the profile templates printed on standard A4 size paper, so now the build can begin !! YAYY !!! :D
I will now start a new thread in the Sailboat forum ...
